It means everything's closed and if you try to drive on the streets you'll be fined $300. |

Dave - really? Not that I don't trust you.. but how do you know that.. I've lived here for 33 years and the only things I connect the siren with is school closings and air raids. |

I'm just guessing it's related to the state of emergency the governor declared. Don't know about fine amount. |

I called the station, it didn't sound like they'll be stopping cars if you're out driving between 8pm and 8am, but they said that cars should not be parked on the street at this time. |

Does that apply to SO too? Where will persons driving to OLS for the Battle of the Bands this evening be able to park? |

State of emergency? You've got to be kidding me. This is a nice bit of snow but come on.

I would assume OLS's parking lot. I can't believe they haven't canceled that event. |

They claim this was the only date OLS had available (see related thread in the Arts, Entertainment... section). I'm surprised no one tried to locate a different venue for another night. Surely something would have been available. Hope the fund raiser for Habitat is still a success and that no one gets seriously injured trying to travel in this weather. |

So have we determined what the siren is for? Seems stupid to sound it if no one knows what the hell it means! |

I called the Maplewood PD when I heard the sirens to ask why they were going off. The officer who answered the phone told me they didn't know and were trying to figure it out. So I guess it has nothing to do with the State Of Emergency. |

Reassuring that the cops don't even know what it means! Guess we shouldn't worry. |

If we heard it loud and clear on the east side (I'm northeast), perhaps it was South Orange? |

Sounded like West Orange to me: Codey's hometown, I think, so maybe he got to press the button personally for a photo-op. |

Bunny's wasn't closed, Dave . Nice and warm and welcoming - bar pie and brew whilst watching the emergency workers stopping at the only place available for food, getting the real update on the roads (very bad), and watching some college ball. Perfect! Argon, the state of emergency was probably declared in anticipation of the worst snowfall of the storm, expected overnight. Our tradition of Bunny's in a blizzard includes stopping at the corner of Church Street and South Orange Avenue, and watching non 4- and all-wheel-drive vehicles trying to make it up the hill to Ridgewood. It was about 5 p.m. and every front and rear-wheel vehicle we saw was sliding sideways and backwards before turning around, probably to try another route. The S-curves were closed by 5:30. People - it's a blizzard!! If you have an emergency that requires driving, please call the professionals for assistance. Let the DPW and county clear the roads unencumbered. I hope that nobody has the need to travel by other than foot (it's pretty cool out, btw), and you're safe and warm and happy. |

Toro Loco was/is still open too! Picked up food from there (by foot) around 8:30. |
