Well, almost.... There's this guy (a parent) down at the bottom of the hill, a hill I might add where a hundred and fifty people are flying down on their sleds and this guy is looking the wrong way and gets creamed, and I mean creamed, legs up in the air and everything buy these two kids. It was awesome...

So, he gets up in a rage and throws snow at the kids like somehow it their fault that he wasn't paying attention and looking the wrong way. So, when another parent (maybe the parents of the kids that took him out) suggest that maybe he was at fault for having his head in the clouds and should have been looking in the other direction, this guy who got creamed shoves him! and a bit of a shouting match ensues.

This guy was livid and would not let it go. He was such a collossal jackass and was acting like he was going to continue it later on when he 'caught up tho that guy later'

Unbeliveable...I hope he doesn't live in SOMA and I hope he reads this because it was embarrassing and I hope he realizes how badly he overreacted.

It was a great collision though :-)

If you don't like being a bowling pin, you have no business being at Flood Hill.

I had a similiar experience years ago. I remember it quite well, I must have been about 11 or 12 and was sleigh riding down the hill at memorial park with my friends. We were heading right for this little girl (maybe 5 or 6) and were yelling at her and trying to get her to move. I guess she didn't hear us and we couldn't change the direction of the toboggen (sp?) - We ended up plowing right into the poor girl. She got up with a bloody nose and her mother came running down the hill - we felt so bad, but at the same time, we hadn't really done anything wrong. The mother was so incredibly rude to us, yelling at us and making us feel just awful. I think that was the last time I ever went sleigh riding.

Sleigh riding is dangerous - please do it at your own risk. Be aware of your and your kids' surroundings. And if you or someone you know gets injured, unless it was truly intentional, realize it's just a chance that you take.

I'm almost positive that running over people with a sled is part of a gang initiation. Hasn't anyone called the gang task force yet?

They don't have these sorts of problems in Short Hills.

Guess it's time to put my house up for sale.

Yeah, you can't be daydreaming down there.

There is one sledder from past years who I do have a problem with. This guy brings an inner tube that looks like its from a giant earth moving machine, and then he and 5 other people barrel down the hill on it. Its a thousand pounds of sliding menace.

I remember sledding when I was a kid in Ohio. Whichever hill you went to there was always a line of logs running down the hill, and you rode down, then walked across to the other side of the logs and walked up over there.

Why can't someone try to impose just a tiny but of order at Floood's Hill? Wouldn't it be more fun to not worry about creaming some poor little kid?

I usually give the right of way to the object hurtling out of control down a steep hill.

lets form a committee to come up with and impose a set of stringent rules for how kids should sled down a hill.

I think the Town is afraid if it sets up rules, it could be liable if they are not enforced.

Last year I tried to convince people at Flood's Hill to walk to the sides of the sled runs, leaving the middle for downslides. Everyone thought I was nuts. I think most people are too lazy and selfish to walk around to a climbing lane.

i must admit i was being sarcastic. your idea ofpeople walking up the sides is a good one though and, one would assume, common sense

everyone should pay attention at the bottom of the hill, for sure! (and I like the idea of designated places for walking up)

Also, yelling to "watch out" is a good idea.

I've taught my kids to "abandon ship" if a collision (esp with a little kid) is unavoidable. Then, even if the kid is hit, it's just with a plastic saucer or light plastic sled, not a full body slam.

Toboggens should probably have their own area on the hill. Maybe that monster tube too.

i'm sorry, but if your an adult adn you get hit by a sled full of kids, that alone makes you a colossal j/a.

secondly, if you are out and about around kids and snow, be prepared for oncoming sleds, snow balls, and all around craziness.

isn't this common sense?

Yesterday was insane at Flood's Hill. It was great!

In my opinion the people on the sleds can only try and avoid the people with their backs turned, not paying attention.

The people on their way up have to be VERY aware.

Yesterday a guy was on his cell phone with his back to the hill and was completely taken out.

An entire family went down too, also with their backs turned to the hill.

Also people with toddlers just weren't paying attention (not looking up and forgetting where they were- at the bottom of a sledding hill!). There were several small children whacked by sleds that did not have to be hurt.

The sledding will be great all this week, but you've got to be aware.

Last year there were cones set out by the Rec. Dept. along the side so that you had to walk up the side of the hill- they weren't there yesterday.

It's a matter of common sense. Kids, use sleds you can STEER, and be alert to AVOID unsuspecting sledders downhill from you. Parents, teach your children that once they've reached the bottom of the hill, they need to ALWAYS keep their eyes facing UPHILL, to evade oncoming sledders.

The S.O. Rec Dept did even tried the "designated walkway" idea several years ago, but had no manpower to enforce use of the marked paths, and the concept withered.

With the use a little common sense, nobody needs to get hurt, and the hill can be a fun place for all ages.

-s.

Now, if we could just get the SOPD to ticket those selfish idiots who insist on stopping their cars in the street at the hilltop to load or discharge their sledders, the entire experience would be safer.

Why not teach the kids to bail out in if there is going to be a collision? This makes perfect sense, but then again we don't live in a senseable world...

Little ones, around Shaker Lakes, also Chagrin Falls. There's a big hill in Cleveland called Cedar Hill "where the glacier stopped," we were told in grade school. You can find them if you look hard enough! Actually, cars slid down Cedar Hill when it snowed. It wasn't exactly a sledding hill...

I saw that collision..It was one of the best I have seen in years. There is nothing like seeing a grown man get his butt kicked by a couple of kids. There is something to be said about a jackass being thrown in the air, landing in the snow like a ragdoll and the acting like a complete fool after the fact. That's why I no longer even bring a sled and just park myself on the top of the hill with a cup of coffee and a bunch of score cards to rate each double gainer four point landing flip. Let it snow..........
And I'll be watching. Thank You

tulip - when you wrote:

Do you mean where Cedar Road goes down the hill and runs into Euclid Ave? You went sledding down that?!? If so, that took guts! But more importantly, did you go to the Boarding House for a bowl of chili, the Euclid Tavern for a beer, or the Coventry Arabica for coffee afterwards?

Twig:

YES, and no. I do mean where Cedar Road goes down the hill and runs into Euclid. No, I didn't ski it, but I remember my first time driving down it. I remember my fourth grade teacher telling us that Cedar Hill was where the midwest actually starts, that is, the plains, and where the glacier ended.
Boarding House, Euclid Tavern and Coventry Arabica were all after I left, c. 1967. I do remember Coventry Library, where I spent countless hours and had my first work experience. I earned a quarter an hour shelving books there, but I loved every minute of it.
It was so long ago, our family used to go to Schraft's in Shaker Square sometimes for Sunday brunch. I don't suppose that's still there.
We did sled around Shaker Lakes. It was beautiful, and always plenty of snow, just like this recent snowfall, only more often.
We did go often to Western Reserve (not connected to Case in those days) to the museum, or Severance Hall. Those were the highlights of life in Cleveland back in the day!!
In summers, used to bike over to Cumberland Pool.

Sorry to be such an old-timer.

...now back to the snow drifts, from the thread drifts!!!

Rod- Great idea. 10 for laughing at a j/a.

Maybe it's my age(30 something) or upbrining(this town) that makes me laugh at all the idiots who think they can move here and OWN this town. More sledding+less Steer sleds+less rules=FUN

Matt, you're right. People who moved here, but didn't grow up here, should just keep their mouths shut. I mean, look how well the town is doing these days, being run by mostly those who have lived here for years, right? This is a critical issue for the town - we can't let outsiders have a view. What right do they have to come in and actually have an opinion on something?

Actually, I agree with your equation, other than the part about sleds with steering. Being able to steer is a lot of fun. If you've never used a sled you can steer, you don't know what your missing.
