Hey, I'm a guitar player/singer, looking to hang with and play with other musicians. No, I'm not looking to join a band or make any money. Just want to connect with other musicians in the area and maybe socialize and whatnot. Anyone interested? I know you're out there...... You can re-name this thread if you want, I know the reference was a bit corny.

"Just want to connect with other musicians in the area and maybe socialize...." Hey Jay, there's only one place in Maplewood to do this, that is unless you're Irish... Try www.heres2thearts.com where guitar player/singer's rule...

...my partner Art does; he sings, plays keyboard, and guitar, all at the same time as a matter of fact. He's at the Cafe now if you want to give him a call... 973-762-ARTS |

Hey Jay, I'm a drummer and percussionist, and I AM... "out there"! What are you into? As for me, I am a Jazzer (ALL styles), but I also play accoustic singer songwriter music, "classic" rock, art rock, free and/or improvised jam band music,... gotta groove or be hip though...! AJC I see you have open mike nights... Do you welcome drummers? If so, how does it work for us? |

Hey JazzMe (Can I just call you 'Jazz' for short?), I'm into more acoustic rock but also love Jazz. I really don't know many jazz chords, though. I'm more of a Blind Faith, Dead, Band, etc. kinda guy. It looks like I'm going to have to get down to this 'Arts' place soon, eh? Ajc, is Tuesday night the only open mike night? It's hard for me to go out on a 'school night'. One thing, though - will I have to get a pickup for my acoustic? Can you mike me and it instead? I'm a bit surprised I have not heard from more 'pickers'.....} |

Jay & Jazzme, Here's 2 the Arts was started as a venue with exactly the kind of interaction that you appear to have in mind. We are a Performer's Showcase Cafe' with open mic nights on Tuesday (specifically poets, stage readers, Karaoke performers, magicians and, of course, vocalists and instrumentalists). On Thursday night we welcome musical soloists, duos, trios, etc. Both acoustic and electric are invited to perform. We have a full back line of amplification, including, keyboard, guitar and bass amplifiers as well as the Bose "Tower" PA system (ideal for micing your acoustic guitar). We also have a variety of microphones sure to satisfy the most discriminating musician. Sunday is our H2TA's jam session, where I start playing and anyone who wants to join me (vocalist or instrumentalist) are welcome. At some point, if there is more than one player then, often, I'll drop out and the others will form some very interesting combos. BTW we do have some available instruments, including a full drum set (although we do have cymbals and hi-hats, you may want to bring your own), a vintage, 1962 Fender Jazzmaster, a 12 String Ovation acoustic/electric guitar, a Gretch 6 string acoustic, a clarinet (bring your own mouthpiece) and a Korg PA1XPro 76 key keyboard. Folk, Rock, Jazz, etc. all are appreciated. Come on down to Maplewood's own "ARTS District on Baker Street" and join the fun. Art |

Thanks Duncan... Hey, we had 25 Maplewood Chamber of Commerce members for a breakfast meeting this morning. I wish you were there, the pancakes were hot on the grill. Unfortunately, we had to rush everyone out at 9:30AM to get all the kids and their parents in for the "Stories in Motion" classes. I can't believe we have so many young families and children in town. You need to bring your kids down for some of their classes. The owner, Ann Biddle, is also a new Chamber member. She is great with the kids, and they're all clearly having a ball... BTW, have you ever thought about joining the Chamber? You should get involved with the business community, besides the great fellowship the business contacts can be very valuable... |

Can anyone tell me about the open mic? I've played at the Dancing Goat, but wondered what the atmosphere/vibe is comparatively. Also - how to sign up? First come first serve? How long do you get? Thanks in advance for any info! |

JazzMe, Yes, Joe Traina lives in Maplewood. He is a very accomplished musician and if you enjoy standards and jazz, I think that you'll really appreciate his quintet. buhinc, Sign up for the open mic session starts at around 8:45. This Thursday, I believe that you will be amazed and amused by Thomas Solomon. Thomas is internationally recognized as one of the leading escape artists in the world. He will soon be featured in an upcoming WNBC television production. He will be performing some of his close-up illusions starting at about 8:00 PM. You don't want to miss this performance. After Thomas we will start the open mic session on a first come, first serve. Depending upon the number of performers each will get to perform anywhere from 4 to 6 numbers. As for the atmosphere/vibe...you'll have to judge that for yourself. As mentioned in a previous post all backline equipment is provided. We look forward to meeting you, Art |

Hey all! I'm so glad I started this post, it's really blossoming. I'm gonna try and make it down (I live on the hilly side of Maplewood) real soon! A 1962 Jazzmaster, eh? Nice. When I start making money, I'm looking into a Jaquar from the 60s. Right now I play a Taylor and it's just fine for me. It may take me a few times before I actually get up there and sing, I've mostly been playing for my own enjoyment for the past few years. I do want to 'commune' with other musicians, though - I miss the 'vibe'. I was actually at a music store in the village pricing out some stuff, so I'm definitely getting the 'itch' again. There's this neat little tuner that works on the vibrations of the neck, it's quite cool. No need for quite while you tune up. Looking forward to 'Jammin'', see you all soon! Jay |

Oh, one more thing - did you know that the bottom half of the calendar for Heres to The Arts on the website is in reverse type and all blacked out? It's hard to actually read, ya' know? What's happening tonight? What's happening for the next few days? What time is the open jam on Sunday? Is Paul really dead? |

Jay, Thanks for the info regarding the calendar....interesting, this is the first that I'm hearing about the problem. I accessed it last night from home and found no problem and then again from the cafe...no problem in either place. Most evening activities begin at either 8:00 or 8:30 unless announced otherwise (sometimes 9:00). This week Comedy night starts at 9:00; Tuesday, Open Mic @ 8:00 (sign-up) & 8:30 performances; Wednesday Jazz @ 8:30; Thursday, same as Tuesday, Friday, New Orleans Jazz/Dixieland 8:30; Saturday Art & Willie @ 8:30; Sunday, Jam Session @ 8:30. I guess it depends on which Paul!!! Art

The Open Mic and Jam Session nights are a lot of fun. I've attended several, it's a good vibe, and as Art says, the sound system is terrific. Also -- don't forget 3rd Gear will be performing on Friday, Feb. 11 at 8:30! |

Thanks ML, but clue me in - Who is 3rd Gear? Do they bike? Will they climb hills in the Granny gear? I don't know if I'll make it up on stage, but I'm shooting to show up with my gee-tar tomorrow night.... |

Speaking of the sound system - I am looking into getting a Bose Personalized Sound system - what is everyone's opinion - I've heard great things, but may have to see some organs to afford it. |

buhinc, You may want to come down to Here's 2 the Arts to try out/audition the Bose PAS. That's the system that we use here. In my opinion it is, at this time, the utilmate sound system for the small to medium size venue. For outdoor use, I'll stick with my Mackie and Cerwin Vega speakers. Art |

Jay, I'm looking forward to meeting you tonight. Almost everyone gets on stage....it's just a matter of how long they stay. Please make sure to introduce yourself. We'll be starting off the night with Thomas Solomon Maplewood's own incredible magician. You won't believe your eyes. After that a variety of Musicians....you won't believe your ears. Art |
