Speaking of Italian...it looks like the old Celebrated Foods is going to be another "Family Style Italian" restaurant similar to Village Trattoria. I guess it will be offset by Cent Anni turning into traditional Continental cuisine.

I didn't even know Celebrated Food was going under. Geez. When you say "family style" is could mean two things: One, a place that caters to families. Another, a fancier (read: pricier) place that serves large-portion family-style entrees that feed more than one. Will it be high-end or low-end, do you know? Trattoria can't be happy -- that's SO close!

wasn't there a 5-and-dime (aka dollar) store in the village at one point? it went out of biz right?

and there are 2 butchers on springfield ave. we visit both on a regular basis. and wasn't there a bakery on springfield ave that also went out of biz?

seems nail shops and pizza joints are the only 2 businesses that can readily survive in maplewood. i'm not surprised there will be another nail shop opening.

"Someone suggested to me that these nail places exist not so much to meet (what must be!) a surging demand for better manicures, but to make it easier for Asian immigrants to gain status in the U.S. en masse."

That's a good one. I hope this bird-brained "someone" isn't in a position of power, both at home and work, to affect other people's lives.

What we really need in downtown Maplewood is a good Thai place. I'd also settle for a hardware store so that I don't have to patronize Home Despot.

"An interesting phenom is shopping areas like Rt. 10 --At first glance it's all big-box stores but there are mini-communities with thriving Mom-and-Pop businesses, think Panang and the Asian grocery store next door."

The Asian grocery (Kam Man Foods) is a crucial regional resource, IMHO.

There's also an excellent but pricy Indian restaurant called Saffron, which shares a building with a TMobile store across Rte. 10.

Check it out sometime!

Parkah - Yes, there was a 5 & 10 where Richard Roberts is now. I'm not sure if they went out of business or retired, but I used to go in there quite often as a middle school student. That and the Book Stop (where Kim's Nails is now). It's funny, sometimes when I'm in there I'll look around and be able to picture in my mind what it used to look like.

I want a good Indian place. A great Thai place is Khun Thai on Morris Ave.
Actually, I'd love it if Carribean Cuisine could move out of their lousy location on First Ave in South Orange to a location in the Village. Their business would do much better.
I hope that's not true about Celebrated Foods. That place is great. Ellen is an artist and her staff takes pride in the work they do. It's a little too pricey for us to be regulars (not a complaint because the food is worth it). What I'm sure will prove to be one of my fondest memories of moving into this town was a beautiful early June evening when my wife and I walked into the village to find a place for dinner. We wanted to dine outside and thought that there were no options. We saw this woman with a shopping cart loaded with cases of soda going down Maplewood Ave. She looked like she was going to lose control, so I offered her help. We got to talking, and I told her we were looking for a place to eat. She suggested Celebrated, but admitted bias. She was the owner. We ate on the lovely patio and took our time, finishing our bottle of wine. It felt like we were on vacation. Great night, great restaurant. I'd hate to see it go. Hopefully, she'll reopen in another location.

I second that, Joe. Nothing like having a good Thai or Indian restaurant, with the latter specializing in South Indian cuisine. Enough already with the masala meat dishes of N. India, which is what 99% of the Indian restaurants serve in this country.

For the record, IMHO, the best restaurant in town is Jocelyne's. The most overrated is probably American Cafe, but that opinion is about a year or so old, and maybe they've changed.

There's a great Thai place on Millburn Ave, a few stores from Cait and Abby's and Enzzo's (which has good food at relatively cheap prices, btw). I think it's technically Thai fusion. It used to be home to another Thai place (Thai Elephant?) but it changed, and my wife and I ate there once because we wanted to sit outside and it's fantastic.

We do get a lot of takeout from Tinga. They deliver with no problems to Maplewood, by the way. Love that place.

Joel, the Thai place you're talking about is Khun Thai (not on Morris Ave, but on Millburn Ave); very good food there, and nice atmosphere, but I wouldn't call their prices cheap; figure on spending $60 a couple, easy. For half that price, we get take out from Morris Thai on Morris Ave in Union, and have never been disappointed.

amandacat - I think Joel was referring to Enzzo's.. I would agree that Khun Thai (although really good) is not cheap.

Based on my observations at Kim's Nails (payroll made in cash, no credit cards, only checks to 'cash' accepted), I would infer that the tax savings helps its profit margins.

I like the place and the owners and staff work hard and do a good job. But a business that does a lot of credit card and other on-the-books transactions is at something of a competitive disadvantage.

Quite right, MusttX2. But you should try Saffron. They have a couple of cooks, one from Bangladesh, the other... I can't remember. If I say Goa, it's probably just wishful thinking. Probably Mumbai.

Anyway, it's not the usual N. Indian fare, or not entirely.

What I want is a good Vietnamese restaurant nearby. The only one in the area that I know of is small and limited--the little cafe at Kam Man. Used to be Taiwanese I think.

Joe - Sorry to say Celebrated is a done deal. The new owners have ripping out the insides for days doing renovations. I hear that Ellen and Chris are using the kitchen of another Maplewood restaurant to do their catering out of. I enjoyed the food at CF too, but will miss Cent Anni being 'upscale' Italian.

Joel - by family style I mean a la Village Trattoria.

With the baby boomers getting older and the generation that preceded them now in its 60's, perhaps what we need is another good funeral home or two in anticipation of the passing of the pre-boomers and of the 76 million boomers. Bound to be a popular business over time.

Off of Route 10 next to the Home Depot in East Hanover. (When I first moved here I drove up and down Rt. 10 for an hour looking for the Home Depot.....it is set way back on the right from the West bound lanes. When you reach an intersection with the Burger King on your left....take a right towards the Home Depot.)

Don't know if it's true but just heard a rumor that CentAni has been sold. The new owner will supposedly keep it Italian (with liquor license) and Franco will join Giacomo at Lot 15

Innisowen: Wanna make it a VERY popular place? How about a combining a mortuary with a nice sit-down eatery?
We could call it The Eternal Rest-aurant.

I've shopped there for Asian groceries but never tried the prepared food - kinda scared me. Is it good?

Dego Diva,

The prepared food is fantastic! You see all the foody types in there (they know a good thing) and all the Asians in there (they know a good thing too!)

It is much, much better than any "chinese" food place and you have the option of getting Vietnamese as well.

Strings - when were you a student at the middle school? Don't forget that we also had a hardware store at one point also. And there was a small grocer's too, we used to get Funyons there after school.
