On Sat. night, during the snow, at about 7 pm, we heard a long siren - must have gone on for 2 or 3 minutes. Did anyone else hear it? Did it mean anything?

I heard it too! The State of Emergency went into effect at 8pm, so I figured it wasn't that because it went off earlier - around 7pm (and they probably don't even sound the siren for that). I've never heard that kind of (long) siren for a fire before.

I thought that kind of siren meant that volunteer fire fighters or EMT people were asked to report for duty.

My brother used to be a volunteer fire fighter in NJ and that was how they were called in.

I know where I used to live, they had sirens that did that -- they'd have different codes too, to indicate whether it was a house fire, car fire, etc. I don't think any of our firefighters are volunteer here in Maplewood, but the EMTs probably are. But, this was different - it was a single long siren. I've never heard that before in my 3 1/2 years here in Maplewood.
