Is there a Maplewood/South Orange ski club or does anyone know of a ski club in a neighboring town?

There is a Short Hills Ski Club. They meet every Tuesday in Summit during the season and every other Tuesday off season. Click the link below for more info.

Most of the members of the ski club are also involved in the Summit Hash...it's like an updated version of a paper chase/hare and hounds chase ; a 'mystery' run (although some people choose to walk instead) where the 'hare' lays a trail and marks it with flour on trees etc. (although there is usually a 'red herring' so you run/walk a few hundred yards in the wrong direction!). They also pause halfway through for refreshments (beer - but also soft drinks too).

My husband joined recently but doesn't go every week as he's often away on business trips. He thinks it's really fun as it's not taken terribly seriously and everyone is up for a good laugh - they're all a friendly bunch and welcome allcomers... if you don't mind getting dirty (many of the trails are in fields or/and forests in NJ) like a few beers, rude and un-PC jokes and happy to socialise after the hash then it's worth checking out:

They run approx twice a week - once on a weekday evening and again at the weekend. My husband is in London this week so he may go on a hash in the City (there are hashing groups worldwide - they began in British colonial outposts).

I saw some of the hash people running around last night and a couple of trail marks posted on a telephone pole.

I didn't put two and two together until this morning.
