I know this has been said before, but I couldn't help myself. FINALLY got to Heart & Soul for take-out last night. (After meaning to check it out for a while now...) Anyway, all the great things that folks have said about this place are 110% true. If you haven't tried this place--GO! We had the blackened honey mustard salmon and baby back ribs. Both were unbelievable. I haven't had ribs this good since I left Kansas City. The corn bread and sides are amazing too. The portions are extremely generous and the prices are really reasonable. (Dinner and dessert for two with plenty of leftovers for lunch today came to only $38 and change.) Try this place--you won't regret it. Chef Jesse--you ROCK! 61 Academy Street (off 1st St. in South Orange) http://www.heartandsoulrestaurant.com/index.html

Hey Mem! Yes, he came out to talk to me for a while. Really nice guy. Have not tried the wings yet. Are they spicy? |

Marian, The baby turkey wings are not spicy at all, they are slow cooked in Jesse's gravy - I was never crazy about wings but these are so tender the meat falls off the bone. I just received his latest email and he is open on Sunday's now: By Customers request!! We are now opened on Sundays from (1 pm to 5 pm) Stop by and sit down for dinner or take out!! Some of today dishes are: Roasted Herb Chicken Cajun Fried Catfish Apricot Glazed BBQ Ribs Blackene BBQ Honey Mustard Salmon Mac & Cheese Candied Yams Collards & Cabbage Mixed String Beans Sauteed Broccoli w/ Garlic Red Velvet Cake Sweet Potato Pie Butter Cake |

Sounds great! I need to get on Chef Jesse's mailing list too. Is it true that he'll e-mail the regulars and ask if anybody's in the mood for, say, gumbo. And then if he gets a good response, he'll go ahead and make it that week? |

Yes! I told him I like dirty rice (New Orleans), and he asked me to tell him when to make it. Very cool. |

So sad. After this thread, my husband and I were very excited to try this resturant. Unfortunately they were not making ribs last night so we didn't order from them. We did order from Burnet BBQ and my husband just loved it. I still want to try Heart and Soul. |

The food in Heart and Soul is fabulous. I have been going since last year, about this time. Let's all support him so he can expand his restaraunt. |

We finally were able to get some ribs last night!!! I thought the ribs were great. The yams were good, the rice and carrots were ok. My husband prefers the ribs at Burnett BBQ. Both places are different. I prefered these ribs. We've ordered ribs from Burnett 2x and both times the food did not sit well with me. |

Based on the feedback here, my family went to Heart & Soul this week and had a great dinner & such fun talking about cooking with Chef Jesse himself. My kids loved the food & didn't complain about leftovers for lunch the next day (unheard of!)...what a great place! |

It's mostly a takeout restaurant but there are a few tables for eating in. Definitely BYOB |
