ok, tooling around town at 25mph is one thing. But before you hit the highway, clear the snow from your car! Today on Route 24, a huge hunk of icy snow from the top of an SUV flew off and hit the windshield of the car behind it (I was slightly behind and to the right). The car which was hit almost veered into me as the driver was so stunned and blinded. It was very scary and VERY preventable.

Driving with snow on top of your car or truck is also illegal in New Jersey. It can (and has) caused road deaths. (I think that the law was passed after someone was decapitated by a sheet of ice flying off of a truck...)

I think that the Highway Patrol even enforced the law on the GSP after one of the big storms last year...I wish they would enforce it more often.

Second and third this. Ice from the top of a truck broke my windshield a couple of years ago on the Turnpike, barely missed hitting my passenger. Very scary.

(Bright side: the truck driver was a total mensch, pulled over and used his cell phone to call for help. He had picked up the truck from a warehouse where it should have been cleaned off and was profusely apologetic, liability be damned. A real gentleman.)

Also make sure you clean off your license plate and your lights!!! This morning I almost got into an accident because I couldn't see someone's blinker on because the snow was blocking it. Then, this afternoon, there was a red SUV going down South Orange Ave with it's license plate completely covered in snow... can you get a ticket for that?

Well, I think not cleaning the roof of a car is more common among SUVs, because they're so high off the ground. There are many good reasons to own these vehicles (animals, work, living in hilly country), but if you're not up to the responsibilities that come with driving them (such as cleaning your roof, staying on your side of the road, etc.) then you have no business driving one. This applies to drivers of all other vehicles as well.

Agreed...If you can't/won't clean it, you shouldn't be driving it!

Genius Product Concept:

An SUV Roof Snow Pusher!

A long, cushioned handle, ending in some sort of semi-rigid bristle attachment, allowing one to push snow of any depth off the roof of an SUV.

Could it look something

like

What a great product, but need catchy descriptive names. What would you call that contraption?

Actually they make these already, complete with a telescoping handle. The problem with the one we have is that the brush is only about six inches wide so it takes awhile to clear the roof.

An observation:
Yesterday on an express bus from staten island going into the (not sure which) lincoln or holland tunnel - they were pulling people over and making them clear the tops of their cars...
