Start making plans! Bassist /Composer BEN ALLISON brings his group Peace Pipe to Maplewood’s Burgdorff Cultural Center on February 12, 2005 Ben Allison is widely recognized for his distinctive and creative music. His group Peace Pipe only furthers this reputation. By arranging unusual instrumentation and incorporating African and hip hop rhythms in the context of a jazz group, Allison has created a dazzling, memorable musical experience for his listeners. ArtsMaplewood is proud to present Peace Pipe as part of its Onstage concert series. Allison was named one of "25 rising jazz stars for the future" by Downbeat Magazine which also selected him three consecutive years in talent deserving wider recognition (TDWR), Best Bassist, Jazz Artist and Top 10 Acoustic Bassist. In 2003 he was also cited in Best Composer, Arranger, Album and Acoustic Group categories. Peace Pipe makes some of the best music of the young but accomplished composer's career to date. - BEN RATLIFF, NEW YORK TIMES Never obtuse in his work, this is definitely a very accessible collection, and this new direction seems to be offering much development. Often superlatives are overused, but Ben Allison's latest venture, Peace Pipe, deserves a generous helping of them. - RICHARD HOLLINGUM, OXFORD TIMES Ben Allison and Peace Pipe Saturday February 12, 2005 The Burgdorff Cultural Center 10 Durand Road Maplewood, NJ Concert begins at 8:00 PM Tickets are $25 general admission; $20 for Seniors and ArtsMaplewood fan club members; $12 for students. WOW! Anyone even remotely interested in music beyond MTV and VH1 simply MUST go check out Ben Allison... this guy is THE absolute cat! And his Peace Pie band is simply astonishing. $25 is pretty tough to fetch, but man is this music worth it... And whoever at the BCC came up with that idea is simply genius (Jim, you bassman you, did you pull that one!?!) IF YOU GOT THE DOUGH, THEN YOU GOTTA GO.

More raves for Ben Allison and Peace Pipe! Allison himself is nearly impeccable on the bass, digging solid grooves and stretching time without ever sounding heavy-handed. Writing the majority of the compositions, he is consistently mindful of the small group's collaborative strength and gives plenty of space to [the soloists]. - Mitch Meyers, Downbeat (Thanks for the nice words, JazzMe-ArtsMaplewood booked the show, although Jim the bassman is ceratinly hip to Ben Allison!) |

Ben, are you his press rep? Cause I need one with such enthusiasm! I'm only sorry he has to deal with the acoustics of the MBCC. If he is playing in the same space where the Strollers and What Exit? Theaters perform, he will have some serious acoustic...challenges. It is a very live room. But his stuff is, to the bone, cool. |

Duncan- His group will be essentially acoustic, which gives the music a better chance. Also, he's got a sensitive drummer whose not a banger. I've heard drummers in that space who didn't change their approach, and it showed. Some drummers (like Kenny Washington with Bill Charlap trio) made the right adjustment, and sounded great It will help to have a full house to soak up some of the sound! (I'm just putting the word out on behalf of ArtsMaplewood, as a musician and board memeber) |
