Well, now that the snow is all gone, it's never too early to plan for Nature's next onslaught....autumn leaves. My neighbor told me that, come this Fall, Maplewood will no longer pick up unbagged leaves at curbside. Is this a fact? How much is the landscaper going to charge to stuff all my leaves into those little bags? Where do you get the bags and what do they cost? Does this really save them money? |

You can get the bags at Pathmark and presumably Home D, they're not expensive, but they're such a pain! If you have an inconspicuous spot in your yard (or don't mind seeing them), ask your landscaper to run over the leaves with a mulching/bagging mower and stack them behind the garage or wherever, for use as winter mulch or spring compost. |

Putting them behind the garage is not a good idea for two reasons. First, if you stack them high enough they will rot the sills, and I have seen this in a number of houses and second, you will attract vermin. Also, if the back of your garage is visible to your neighbor, your neighbor might retaliate and put a trailer in their backyard. I hope, btw, that this is only a rumor. We have ten trees and the amount of work in bagging the leaves is mind boggling. |

This is not true at all (yet). The NJDEP adopted a new set of stormwater regulations (forced on them by the EPA). The regulations state that the leaves can not sit on the roadway for more than 7 days. I think we will be able to get around the bag deal, but has yet to be determined. |

Why should I pay for leaf pickup? I don't have a tree on my property! I didn't want any. Why am I being force to subsidize people too selfish to cut down all the trees on their property or take care of them themselves? If you want trees, you should have to pay for leaf pickup yourself, not put your burden on me, the taxpayer, because you are too selfish and expect others to subsidize your decision to have trees. Oh wait. This isn't the education thread. Nevermind. |

Rastro, I got you and I wanted to post something along those lines myself, but you beat me to the punch. ROTFLMAA You don't want trees? There are plenty of McMansion Developments that will make you a happy camper. |

Rastro, you may not have trees but you have to have leaves because everyone else in this town has trees...that is unless you have a leaf repellent system. I don't want to do a compost heap, compost stinks. Let's try to keep picking them up at curbside. |

Jode, My post was totally tongue in cheek, a little jab at someone who is vehemently opposed to funding public schools. Change leaf to child in my post, and that's been his rant. That said, and continuing tongue in cheek, why should I have to pick up YOUR leaves on MY property? If you can't keep your trees from shedding their leaves on my property, maybe you shouldn't have trees either! I mean, if you can't take care of your trees, why do I have to deal with their remnants? Bah! |

Bobk, behind the garage, but not against the garage. Agreed that it would be a big mistake to let the leaves touch the sills or siding. We have about 15 feet from the garage to the "river" in S.O., with the property lines pretty much covered by shrubs. My husband wants to develop this area, but I'm saving it for my leaves. We are hoping there will be no retaliatory trailer! The chain link fence by the stream is bad enough. |
