I was stunned to read in today's NYT that Michael Bruce Ross, the serial killer on death row in Connecticut, was in Cornell's class of 1981! I checked my yearbook, and sure enough, his senior photo was there. He apparently did not belong to any clubs, though.

shoshannah,

I heard a thing on the radio about him...I dont even remember there being a murder on campus back then...although I do remember the marches to raise awareness about attacks on women. His name sounded alot like some guy I keep picturing who I thought was from my year..I guess I should look for a picture. I wonder if I ever cut in front of him in line at the Hot Truck and pissed him off. But hey, you were at least in Shoelkopf Stadium with him at the same time for graduation. Im a year later and knew a few "most likely to be incarcerated"s from my year...except most of them were most likely's for white collar crimes.

I loved Shoelkopf; used to work out there. A real "gym". Just got my newsletter today; they opened a new restaruant in MVR called Martha's; that was the worst restuarant before then. When you were there did they have that lunch services place across the johnson school? johnson school has since, btw moved to sage hall...could go on but I won't.

I don't even remember there being a restaurant in MVR. I guess it was just that bad. Anything would be better than Okenshields, though.

I havent had a TullyBurger or a BoBurger since school. Do they still have Straight cookies or is that name not acceptable any longer? I only lived on campus for one year and was on the meal plan just that year. But I remember the dining place, at Balch Hall was it, on North Campus that was the healthy dining alternative. Ate there once only.

Oh and did a search on the Daily Sun site...Michael Ross did not look familiar but he was in Alpha Zeta, one of the two Aggie fraternities. He was also engaged to be married while an undergrad...something I would have thought was pretty foreign at the time.

Healthy dining alternative? You guys are all a lot younger than I am.

My sister-in-law was in the class of '81. I don't know if she knew Mr. Ross, though.

I dont know how far the archives go back...I did a search for "Michael Ross" and got 20 or so hits, most of them about lacrosse.

My guess is that if it happened in May, it was either during finals when noone picks up a paper of any sort not related to an exam or after everyone was gone for the school year...and graduating seniors still around were probably still not picking up newspapers the last two weeks of May before graduation. The victim was an immigrant grad student...another possible reason it didnt make much news at the time...not likely someone who lived in the middle of a large group of students.

In my tenure ('90) the big thing was a suicide every year off the gorge. And of course a free drink at Johnny's for every 3 ding letters...
