I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this! According to the Newark Star Ledger, Acting Gov. Richard Codey was upset over comments a DJ on radio staion 101.5 radio station made about Codey's wife's struggle with postpartum depression. Last night, Codey was at the station for the monthly "Ask the Governor" show. When he ran into the DJ in the hall he told him "I wish I weren't governor, I'd take you out." They then got nose to nose and others had to come between them. While the DJ may have been out of line (I've heard his shows and he can be obnoxious) What are your thought on this? An Acting Gov. threatening someone with bodily harm? |

Forgot to include a link to the article http://www.nj.com/search/index.ssf?/base/news-20/11067226846070.xml?starledger?n top Sdenois - So you agree with an elected offical with armed troopers standing there threatening to harm someone? If you or I did this, we'd be arrested. |

Craig Carten is a wannabe shock jock and is loving every minute of this publicity. It was probably his on-air persona who made the statement (pretty obnoxious guy) and he was surprised at Codey's reaction. Codey was understandably offended and may have acted a little inappropriately, but didn't do anything illegal. No big deal. Good for Codey for calling him on it. At least he is not afraid to stand up for himself. |

I don't know what 101.5's call letters are but they should be WLCD. I've only listened to that station in bits and pieces over the year. It's consistently dumb, and I'll never understand why their shows all use an echo effect. Perhaps it helps let non native speakers know that they're listening to dumb radio. |

I think we've found something we all can agree on. The radio guy was a jerk, and Codey called him on it. Good. |

Apparently Codey really said "I'll take you outside." But who knows.... Whatever he said, good for him - the jock deserved it. |

Unfortunately, the 1st Amendment which was really intended to allow criticism of the government, can't be interpreted narrowly enough to exclude shock jocks from its protection.

I think he's the same Craig Carten that was on a sports talk radio show about 5 years ago before going to 101.5. He was awful then, and it sounds like things haven't changed. |

The whole "shock jock" thing makes me wonder about our culture. Why do people like to hear someone be rude and/or humiliating? Why are radio station owners and managers willing to make their money by catering to, and fostering, this sick market? Yesterday I learned about some NYC radio show called "Miss Jones in the Morning" which was just canceled because the show staff thought it was funny to re-write the song "We Are The World" with lyrics ridiculing the tsunami victims. WTF?!! We don't need a law for it to be quite clear that these people should never be allowed near a radio studio again!! "The piece used racial slurs to describe people swept away in the disaster, made jokes about child slavery and people watching their mothers die." article |

No , but Joe "D" is.Realisticly Codey had no chance , NJ needs new leadership not some 30 yr career politican that hails from the highest taxed county in the nation. If Codey offered him self up for state wide election he'd be turn into a bloody mess. |

If I had 4 armed st. troopers behind me I'd get up in Ray Lewis's grill. Cmon folks the "First Lady" said she considerd putting her baby in a microwave, I asked my mother if she ever wanted to put me in a microwave , she said yes , when I was 16 & wrecked the family car. I'm surprized Codey isn't getting up in her grill , she is the wife of a career politican , she doesn't know the drill by now. |

"career politician" Sounds like a talking point from the Corzine campaign. Maybe we need an "ordinary" down to earth kind of guy, instead of a wealthy celebrity. |

I heard an interesting take on Corzine as governor. Some reasonably influencial non-government Dems are worried that he will not tackle the corruption issues because it might impact his run for the Presidential nomination.

Too bad. I really liked Codey. Fighting for rights for the mentally ill, putting life saving defibrulators in state schools, ensuring ethics in government... acting like a normal person when his wife's illness was mocked and ridiculed. I felt like he was "one of us." Jersey is #1 to him. I think Corzine will try to parlay his governorship (if he gets it) into a more nation-wide profile (for him). Lord knows he has the money for it. |

It makes you wonder - is it possible for a "normal" person, like Codey, to gain higher office? It would be too bad if it's not. |

Chris Christie will run in a primary against Forrester and win easily. Christie will then lose to Corzine in a 53/47 vote. |

Are Corzine's beliefs/intentions very different from Codey's? Corzine's voting record overall has been excellent. While I abhor the idea of buying your way into office, I don't think he'd be a terrible Governor, and I appreciate the fact that he is far less beholden to others than your usual Jersey pol. |

The idealistic belief that you can get elected to a high profile office (i.e., Governor) without a ton of money is...well...idealistic (IMHO). I'd rather he be funded by his own fortune then by religious extremists (see separate Bill Moyers thread), or any other extremists for that matter. |

I don't get all this alarmism over rich guys running for office. it's not possible to just "buy" yourself an elected office. People do need to vote for you after all. We elected one rich guy to the Senate in NJ (Corzine), but we rejected a different rich guy (Forrester). If all it takes is lots of dough, then why aren't Ross Perot and Michael Huffington holding office some place? I really couldn't care less if a rich guy runs. If I think he/she will do a good job, they've got my vote. If not, they don't, regardless of how much they spend. And I'd guess the vast majority of voters are like me. |

NJ is one of the last of the machine states . To get on the Democratic ballot you have to pay off the county bosses. In Essex co. case that means giving a check of about 30k to Joe "D" , who in turn kicks some cash to Adubato. The idea of a great leader rising up to challenge the status quo of "THE WAY IT IS " is frighting to these guys . But they have let the fox in the hen house . This guy can't be controled , he knows how to use chump change on these hacks . He wasn't just the CEO of Goldman , he rose up from being one of their best bond traders , navigating oneself through the parters @ Goldman is one of the hardest thing in biz to do . He should eat these guys up. |

ML, The answer to that is simple: there aren't enough seats for every rich guy who wants one. I think the proper question is why isn't some poor guy or gal holding office someplace.
