Well I know it's too late at the moment but we had a ball last night at the Loew's movie palace in Journal Square in Jersey City. This is truly an old-time movie house, with a lobby you could probably fit the entire Burgdorff Cultural Center in, and an auditorium which seats 2000 in the orchestra, 1000 in the balcony (which is being restored).

What did we see? The Adventures of Robin Hood was the first movie and then we stayed for Raiders of the Lost Ark. They also showed The Thief of Bagdhad eariler in the day but we missed that. If you like movies you can just imagine how much fun it was to see these wonderful action-adventure swashbuckling stories on a big, big, BIG screen. I saw details in Olivia DeHaviland's and Basil Rathbone's costumes you would never see on a TV screen. Oh, and by the way they threw in Rabbit Hood with Bugs Bunny ("Don't you worry never fear, Robin Hood will soon be here") before the big feature.

The place itself is worth the trip. A 1929 masterpiece. If you're interested they are planning a series of classic romantic comedies for the end of February. Here's the link: www.loewsjersey.org.

This was a blast. I highly recommend the place for nostalgia and film buffs alike.

We have been there for a couple of screenings. The most memorable was a long day of Frankenstein movies which included a restored version of a silent movie shot at the Edison sight in West Orange by Edison, "Young Frankenstein" directed by Mel Brooks, and the original full length Frankenstein. It was a blast.

You are right the theater is awesome.

Wow, looks like a place I'd like to go. Is there a regular schedule, or just occasional shows? Web site doesn't have a calendar, unless I'm missing it.

theres a Yahoo group you can sign up for to get email notices...took the kids to see "Its a Wonderful Life" in December (tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for kids and $1 popcorn)...walking around the cool balcony of the lobby, my daughter said, it feels like there are ghosts here. I asked of who..and she said, of old actors. Theyd be happy with the effort people have made to save and start restoring it. Sbenois was an early advocate of the place.

Doesn't look like they have a regular schedule ... sort of ad hoc scheduling of whatever strikes their fancy.

Now I'm depressed ... I would have loved to have seen Young Frankenstein on the big screen.

"I suggest you put on a tie!"

I actually saw Young Frankenstein at that theater in 1974.

A few years back, when I still lived at home, I was watching "Young Frankenstein" by myself and my dad walked in. He asked what's this crap you're watching--figuring it was just a cheesy horror film. I told him it was a classic. Incredulous, he said, "Yeah right," but sat down to watch. It was late in the movie, and the first couple of gags he saw he didn't find all that funny, but then came the "Putting on the Ritz" scene, and he was won over.
What a great movie.

I also went to the first run of "Young Frankenstein" with my Dad in 1974 on a snowy night when no one was on the streets but maniacal Mel Brooks fans.

We still watch it at home and now my kids love it.

I can't wait to try out this theater, thanks for posting.

You know what's a great night too- Jersey Gardens Mall's theater- in the leather, premuium seats with complimentary waitress service. The middle bar between the seats lifts up so couples can snuggle.

I saw one of the last movies in the Loew's before it was closed, pre restoration(sometime in the early to mid 80's). The movie was a Richard Pryor stand up film, and I remember the cold, dark and damp theater and lobby, as well as lots of pot smoke. The theater was very shabby, plaster was falling down, but you could see the majesty of the old place. I performed at a renovated Loew's "Palace" in Richmond , Virginia (I think it's called Virginia Center for the Perfoming Arts) and it is stunning to see one of these beautiful theaters restored. The ceiling looked like a night sky, with twinkling lights as stars and "clouds" that slowly sailed by.

Growing up in Queens, I used to go to the Valencia Theatre on Jamaica Ave. This was also a magnificent theatre that looked like a castle, with turret's on the ceiling and what looked like a night sky with twinkling stars. I think it's now a Baptist Church.

The photos of the theater don't do it justice. Don't forget to check out the fireplace in the mens bathroom.

There used to be a working fountain inside the theater many years ago.

Enjoy.

ASG

P.S.
I believe they give a tour of the theater and stage if you call ahead.

Do you mean the theatre that the Jehovah's Witnesses bought and restored? It is beautiful. I was not aware that they were offering public showings of movies. Mostly it is used for religious gatherings.

The Jehovah Wintesses bought the Stanley Theater which is across the street from the Loews next to the PATH station.

Good time to check out the website again. They've got their next movie schedule up for the first weekend in March.

"Casablanca" Friday night at 7:30.
"Rocky" Saturday afternoon.
"Ben Hur" Saturday night at 7:30.
"Gone With the Wind" Sunday afternoon at 1:30.

I'll be there. Anyone know a good restaurant in the Journal Square section of Jersey City?
