My son's 3rd grade classroom (and the computer and music room) were pretty badly damaged by a burst pipe (maybe a steam pipe?) over the weekend. I guess they salvaged a bag of things from each kid's desk (Mrs. Heumann's room). But as my son described it, because it was hot water -- there is a mold concern, and so lots was destroyed (*please* remember, this is from the mouth of a 3rd grader!). The letter from the principal noted destruction of "teaching materials", but was not more specific. My son volunteered to donate his stuffed animals to the classroom -- I guess whatever was in the classroom got wet. I'm expecting more detail on this today. Perhaps the librarian ;-) or others will post, too. Once we know more -- perhaps we can find out what is needed to replace/repair those 3 rooms that is not covered by insurance (is there insurance?). What makes you think that these rooms are not covered by insurance? |

I'm thinking that all the things the teachers bring into the classroom, all the supplies she's asked for over time from parents, her classroom books (not text books), games, etc -- not likely insured (although I don't know). /p |

Tuscan also had a classroom with a major leak in a hot water pipe over the ceiling of a top-floor classroom on Friday. It took down a portion of the ceiling tiles as well and there's a definite moldy smell to the carpeting and the classroom. I think I'd heard that Seth Boyden also had a few classrooms with significant leaks earlier in January. Don't forget the ceiling in the Board of Ed. Building which came down in December. I am sure these repairs are extremely costly to take care of - I wonder what it does to next year's budget projections. I hope there is some insurance coverage, but these are old buildings and preventative maintenance is expensive. I hope Board of Ed. members are taking note of the situation. I'm glad no child was hurt with the problems with hot water pipes at Tuscan and South Mountain. But what are we doing to try to prevent things like this from happening in other classrooms/other buildings? |

Hi Peteglider <g> . From what I know... the classroom will be unusable for some time. Mrs. H is upset that many of the things she has made , or her own personal property ( i.e. stuffed animals, books, etc), may not be salvagable. The room, however, does not reek as badly as Ms W's music room... which really stinks (I haven't been down to check it out, this is what others have told me!) . The music room had ceiling tiles collapse from the water flowing from the ceiling. (thank goodness no students were present). The computer in the music room was wet, as was the piano. I'm also told that instruments and music items that were in boxes, were also likely damaged or destroyed. As for the computer room (adjacent to the library, which was not damaged) the majority of the damage is confined to the computer lab carpeting which got wet. No lab machines seem to have gotten damaged -- the door was closed, so just the carpet tiles were wet. However the lab is off limits until the carpet is likely replaced. Just spoke to Mrs H and she says she sent a letter home today explaining what was damaged. She also says that personal belongings and items sent in by parents, etc, are not covered by insurance. She is still assessing the damage as things dry or are cleaned out -- and is trying to figure out what can be saved , and what is a health hazard due to mildew, etc. |

Thanks Suzanne! Tonight my son was already thinking about things he could contribute! I hope that Mrs Heumann reaches out to the parents -- and perhaps via MOL to the community -- so the class room can be the vibrant, wonderful place it was before all this. I think my son has been *very* fortunate to have some great teachers the past couple of years at SOuth Mountain -- as are his teachers this year -- they put SO MUCH of themselves into their work. Especially with a little guy like mine who needs an extra hand -- it makes a BIG difference, and I appreciate it deeply. I hope that the music teacher, too, lets us all know how we can help -- Pete |

Mrs Heumann was so excited to see her name on MOL ( I called her ), although she wishes it was not for this reason. She will be reaching out to the parents, eventually, but needs to figure out her and the students' immediate day-to-day needs, especially in terms of school supplies. I know she mentioned that Mrs. C's class's spelling? notebooks were totally destroyed. I suggested to her that she sign on to MOL and contribute to this conversation. I will contact Ms. W and see what is needed there in the music room. (Mrs H was wondering who this nice guy, peteglider was!) <g> Just off the phone with the music teacher. She thanks everyone for their concerns and other than the computer and printer, the other damaged items were sheet music and other paper item, and percussion intruments. As for the instruments, they were wet, and Ms W says it is a wait-and-see game to see if the items as they dry. The sheet music, etc, she has been placing all over the school near the heating vents to dry it out. She will keep everyone posted as things progress. |

The problem was the extreme cold. Most of the repairs were done in house. By the Maintenace Dept. Tuscan was a burst heating coil in a Unit Ventilator from fresh air leakage. South Mountain was also the same problem. I was talking to one of the guys that work for the BOE. He said he was told the BOE has a 10 G deductible. |
