I work near exit 33 of I-78, so in the evening, I drive home eastbound. Right around where I-78 splits into local and express, right before where 24 merges in, there's a strong smell, at least when I'm there. It smells like very fresh tobacco. It's not really unpleasant. Maybe it's fertilizer. Is there some sort of factory there?

It's really bizarre - I noticed it 3 years ago when I worked out there before & it's still there now.

Sometimes it smells more like pipe tobacco. Other times, wet tobbaco, or the smell of an unlit cigarette. Every so often, it smells like actual lit cigarettes.

It's the compost pile in springfield.

Where is the compost pile? I might like to swing by it, just for the fun of it. The smell is strange and compelling but not necessarily objectionable. It is strong at times.

I believe the scientific name for that smell is "New Jersey."

You get the same smell driving back from "The Mall at Short Hills". I totally freaked out the first time I smelled it...I was alone in the car at night and I began to think some crazy stalker (that liked pipe tobacco) was hiding in the back seat!
