Music Carnival! A Concert Celebrating Hispanic Culture Featuring the Maplewood Community Music concert band Special guests: David Braham and the Latin Jazz Alliance Viva Flamenco dance demo with Antonia Messina Sunday February 6, 2005 2 p.m. Tuscan School Auditorium Harvard Avenue, Maplewood Suggested donation: $5 Free refreshments provided following the concert Maplewood Community Music will host a musical celebration of Hispanic culture on Sunday February 6, 2005, in Maplewood. The concert - called "Music Carnival!" in tribute to the festive holiday season - will feature the organization's 30-piece concert band playing such thematic favorites as Malaguena, Beguine, and Paso Doble/The Golden Ear. David Braham and the Latin Jazz Alliance will join the program as special guests. The Latin Jazz Alliance is led by David Braham, a noted jazz pianist who has played around the world with top musicians such as Slide Hampton, Etta Jones, Houston Person, Lou Donaldson, Mark Murphy and Al Grey. The Latin Jazz Alliance plays regularly on Thursday nights at Cecil's jazz club in West Orange. Also providing color to this event is Viva Flamenco with Antonia Messina. She will lead a demonstration of this Spanish dance,welcoming all members of the audience to participate. Antonia Messina has been dancing abroad and around the U.S. for 20 years. Antonia studied in Spain and the United States with Flamenco greats, La Tati, Ester Moreno, and Nehilda Tejado and toured with the Ramon de los Reyes Dance Theater in Boston. She presently resides in Maplewood and teaches classes locally. She also directs the vibrant and eclectic Viva Flamenco, a unique ensemble mixing traditional flamenco with jazz, percussion and dance. The group performs in theaters, caberets, festivals and school performances. Maplewood Community Music was founded in February 2003 and will celebrate its second anniversary with this concert. The organization also includes two jazz bands - a 19-piece swing band and a traditional New Orleans jazz band. Maplewood Community Music is an organization of the Maplewood Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs.
