Did anything ever happen with "White City"? I have a tape of it but I thought it was supposed to become a movie, or cartoon, or comic book or something. Anyone know?

Saw the Kid's Are Alright when it opened in the city. My sister won tickets from WNEW-FM and I think Pete and John came out before the film started. Loved it. Saw Quadrophenia when it first came out also. One of my all time favorite Who songs has to be Baba O'Reilly. One of my favorites to start the day...."Out here in the fields, I fight for my meals.." |

I didnt realize The Iron Man became The Iron Giant! Thanks S...and the director of Iron Giant directed The Incredibles too I think. Just did a quick search and noticed that Pete was an executive producer of The Iron Giant and wrote the music based on the novel written by the Ted Hughes, who had two children with Sylvia Plath and is by some blamed for her suicide. The book was an anti-war tale as well as perhaps a means for to explain and help the children with the death of their mother according to one account. |

Here is today's Sbenois Who Story: Live-Aid, 1985, London When I heard that McCartney and The Who (my two favorites) were both playing in London, I decided that this was a must attend concert. Since I was such a Who freak, I had the name and number of their NY Booking Agency and rang them up. I told them that I had to have tickets and they had to take care of this for me. The woman on the phone laughed and said that I must be a very dedicated fan if I was going to fly to London. So she gave me the number of the London Live-Aid promoter - Harvey Goldsmith. This was sometime around 5pm NY time. I was so excited to have gotten this far that I totally forgot what time it was in London. I dialed the number and it turned out to be his home phone number! He answered the phone and at first was pissed because I had awakened him - it was around 1am in London. Then he laughed and told me to call his office in the morning - reminding me of the time difference. I called the number at 9am London time and told them that they had to sell me some tickets, "Harvey said so". They gave me a choice - regular tickets or VIP seating for a few pounds more. I went for the VIP tickets just assuming that the seats were better. When we got to London, we picked up the VIP tickets (along with another set still unpunched) and went to Wembley. In we walked to this special area. I turned around and realized that standing right in front of me was a reception line of all the singers being greeted by Prince Charles and Lady Di. I took a picture of Bob Geldof being greeted by Lady Di. The same shot appeared in all the papers the next day. We then went to our seats and quite honestly, we were pretty disappointed because they weren't very close. We sat down and started chatting with the folks around us. They asked us why we flew from America and I explained that I was a very big fan of The Who and McCartney. They said "you like The Who?" I said "yeah". They said "oh, those are Roger's kids right in front of you". They turned around and said hi. We talked to them for a while then suddenly someone said "excuse me, I need to get to my seat". I looked up and it was Dave Gilmour. He settled in two seats down from me. Next to me was the English actor John Hurt. Sting came by. The whole thing was so weird. About two hours into the show, Pete Townshend walks in and everyone says hello. Then Daltrey comes by and says hello to his kids. Kenny Jones shows up. So does Entwistle. I took pictures of each and am the proud owner of a Live Aid program signed by all of them. The only downside was that McCartney's mic went out when he sang Let It Be. It was such a let down. He hadn't been performing live for quite a few years by 1985 so this performance was a big deal. And it was ruined. The DVD of the event that came out recently contains an overdub he just did to correct the mic problem. |

In the 70's I was touring Europe with the Cherry Vanilla Band and our artist liason rep from RCA used to work for the Who. We begged him to tell us his best Keith Moon story. He swore this was true: The Who were playing in Paris and they were staying at a real swanky hotel. Moon was in the lobby with a boom box blasting a tape of their performance of the night before, when an older very well dressed gentleman quietly told Moon to "Please turn down that noise". Moon very graciously turned off the boom box and asked the man if he would indulge him for a moment, so that he could show him something in his room. The old man thought he was crazy but Moon assured him he was a very rich, well known celebrity and he meant the old man no harm. Supposedly he finally convinced the guy to come up to his room. When they got there, Moon asked him if he wouldn't mind waiting outside just a minute so he could tidy up. The guy waited for around 30 seconds, Moon set off some kind of minor explosive device, walked out of the room saw the old man shaking and said, "That my dear man was noise". He then picked up his boom box turned it on full blast and said "And this is the bleedin Ew".

DAMN, S, that's a great story. Uke, I've got another Moon story, although I didn't hear it from anyone as close to the band as an artist rep... I think I read it in Rolling Stone a long time ago: The Who had finished their shows in some major European city and it was early in the morning. Everyone was hungover and bleary-eyed, and they were dashing to the airport, running late, as usual. Suddenly, Keith says, "Oh NOOO, we've got to go back, we've absolutely got to go back, I've forgotten something." The rest of the guys all looked at each other and realized that, with Keith, it really could be something dire that had to be dealt with, so they race back to the hotel. Moon runs inside, and comes out a few minutes later, empty-handed but with a smile on his face. Everyone asks, "so what did you forget?" Keith grins and said "I forgot to smash the television." |

DRUMMERS Unfortunately, the drummer from the Cherry Vanilla (after hearing all these stories), thought he had to compete with Moon. Note to up and coming rock and rollers-YOU CANNOT COMPETE WITH KEITH MOON ON A TIGHT BUDGET. We literally had to flee Hamburg after our drummer flooded a hotel room there. It was no use, RCA was waiting for us in Sweeden with the bill. I don't think we ate for the next couple of days, in order to pay them back . |

Hehehe Ukealalio... I know that song because at the time I was a kid and aspiring... punk (and, yeah, I sure wanted to rock'n roll - I had just about started to play). I was, already then, a music nut... so if it came out, chances are I know it! I remember this song particularly well because it was somewhat different: obscure, fun-poking, hip, and yet it rocked... to us The Punk was a bit of a cult song. And while I see a grave injustice in the song not making the charts, to me it was at the time yet another reason to love it and CV. BTW, I'd love to meet you sometime... |

Too bad I didn't know this sooner. In November The Cherry Vanilla Band headlined the Max's Kansas City Tribute Show at Don Hills. I played both with Cherry Vanilla and Jeff Salen (of the Tuff Darts remember them ?, I co-produced his soon to be released CD). A highlight of the show was Rufus Wainwright was standing in the front row cheering us on (he's real good friends with Cherry). Unfortunately 2 weeks after this gig Cherry got hit by a car in front of her apartment in LA, luckily she's gonna be OK. If your a jazz fan you also may have heard of my brother in-law Joe Locke. If not give a listen he's an incredible vibes player. Sorry for the thread drift, back to the Who. The drummer in the Cherry Vanilla Band played both with Paul and Simon Townsend. I think Paul for a time was living in the Bronx and working for the phone company. Supposedly Pete wanted his brothers to make it on their own and would provide financial support, only if they really needed it. I know my buddy did the Uncle Floyd show with Paul Townsend, anybody got a copy ?. |

Sbenois, I've been thinking about Pete's use of the n-word and can't place it. Found the lyrics on the web and no mention of it there either? Are you sure it's the studio version you're talking about. I know it's also live on Isle of Wight, maybe there? I recently got a copy of the new hybrid-SACD remaster of Tommy. For all you Who fans, it's worth the extra cash. Moonie is no longer relegated to the background and it's just a fantastic mix. Count me in on any Who flick at the town theater: Quad, Tommy, The Kids are Alright, even McVicar. I have all the soundtracks and have seen the videos/dvd's but I've never seen them in the cinema. Who related: does anyone else think that Roger's last studio album - Rocks in the Head - is really good? Or is it just me?

It's definitely on the studio single and I'm sure I've got a few version of it said live as well. When it was performed in '71/'72 Roger absolutely said it. When they toured later and did it, beginning around four years ago, the lyric was changed. In fact, if you scrounge around, you'll se that it's ben purged in many places!
quote:I Don't Even Know Myself There's nothing in the way I walk That can tell you where I'm going There's nothing in the way I speak That can betray anything I'm knowing Don't think that by the way I dress You can fit me on a labeled shelf Don't pretend that you know me Cause I don't even know myself I don't mind if you try once in a while I don't mind if I cry once in a while The doors aren't shut as tight as they might seem I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream Don't listen to the words I say Weighing up if I'm enlightened Don't shiver as you pass me by Cos Mister I'm the one who's frightened The police just came and left They wanted me and no one else Don't pretend that you know me 'Cause I don't even know myself Wish I did I don't mind if you try once in a while I don't mind if I cry once in a while The doors aren't shut as tight as they might seem I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream Do you remember me? I don't remember you Do you still love me? You know I think you do I have been gone, and some prison warder knows my scream I just gotta fight my way out of this dream There's only five who know my real name And my mother don't believe they know it What she calls me is the way I'm staying And no n*****'s gonna ever throw it Come on all of you big boys Come on all of you elves Don't pretend that you know me Cause I don't even know myself I don't know myself I don't mind if you try once in a while I don't mind if I cry once in a while

Slight thread drift- Patti Smith used to throw the N word around during her stream of consciousness verse, at the beginning of her shows, way back in the 70s. She'd start using the word to identify writers and musicians whom she considered important to the development of the "punk" aesthetic. I think she considered a punk and a n***** synonymous. So, I suppose you can substitute punks for n******, in "I Don't Even Know Myself". Interestingly, at a show at the Bottomline she labeled Pete Townsend a n*****! FWIW

That was back in the day when you could have a triple bill, with artists who could all be headliners! One of my favorite shows from that era- Garland Jeffreys backed by the Rumour, Rockpile (Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds) and Marshall Crenshaw! So, if the Who were Babe Ruth, who would the Clash and David Johansen be? BTW, someone I know who went to the Shea shows said those were the loudest concerts he ever saw. He also said that was the only team with a winning record he saw at Shea that year.

I saw the Who three years ago in the Garden from the front row in front of Entwistle. THAT was the loudest concert I ever heard. The night before that I saw them from the second row sitting directly under Townshend. I cannot describe what watching this guy play guitar from five feet away was like. Unreal

Yeah, DC...I love the Who and have seen them a number of times (though never in a small venue) and I would take the Clash on a bad day before them... Now that i've said that...Eminence Front is my favorite Who song...so many a Who fan will say I have no taste anyway (!) Be well and listen well all...don't forget those ear plugs (yes, you can use them so as to protect your hearing and still get the highs...) says the attender of 600+ noisy concerts!! PS Led Zep or a facsimile thereof were at LiveAid in Philly in '85. Jason Bonham played the drums standing (sitting) in for his departed father. It was waaay cool and one mean mother of an exhausting day sitting on concrete in the hot sun... |

I like the Who but to be honest my classic rock days are long past. I now am fixated with other more modern genres. But I thought since everyone was sharing their Who stories, I would share mine. When I was a wee lad (I'm guessing 11 y/o) visiting my Grandparents in Florida. Somehow my brother (5 years older than me) and sister and first cousin (both 3 years older than me) all convinced my Grandmother to take us to see a movie. We were driving around town and passed an art house theatre (I am just guessing here, not because I remember it or anything), where the movie Heavy Metal was playing. Somehow my brother who was 16 at the time knew of the film which was a new release. My Grandmother who was pretty sharp (still is to be honest) wanted to know about the film cause the theatre was small and she was unfamiliar with it, and it was old and run down. All my brother and first cousin could tell her about the movie was that it was animated. Now keep in mind that this was before Anime was popular. Back then animated films were for kids (right?), and in fact, I remember seeing ALMOST EVERY re-released Disney film with my Grandparents (especially Fantasia). Well wouldn't you know it, the marquee says HEAVY METAL and right below it states The KIDS ARE ALRIGHT. No lie. So my Grandmother thinks 'Hey it's ok to bring the kids to Heavy Metal', so she buys us all tickets and we sit down to watch. It was only about 20-30 minutes into The Kids Are Alright that we all finally figured out that this was actually a double feature. Between all the crazy antics in the film and all the cursing it is a testament to my Grandmother that she let us stay and watch both movies. I think she let us stay through The Kids cause she knew we were really there to see Heavy Metal (the childrens movie -- little did she know). But I got to tell you, she let the ticket guy have a major earful for selling us all tickets when we left. Much to my Grandparents dismay, for weeks afterwards we kept saying quotes from BOTH films, and I distinctly remember hollering over and over again, "NOSE DIVE!" which one of the robots in Heavy Metal screamed as he plummeted nose first into the coke-laden floor of the rocket ship. To this day that story is a favorite for our family to share with each other. Bringing smiles to our faces with each rememberance. I actually have one other good Who story, but it's less funny and just one of those times when the planets aligned perfectly kind of kismet stories. |

The entire promo was displayed to the sound of Won't Get Fooled Again. All the CSI series use Who songs as their themes. The new Saab commercials feature I'm Free.
