I went for a full body massage at Kim's Nails because I had the week from hell at work. Does "please massage my feet" mean "treat my butt like bread dough" in Asian? Minimal time on upper body, two seconds spent on my feet, and back to the old butt. Never again. That guy knows more about my butt than I do. I actually had to stop him when he started trying to cram on of those "hot volcanic rocks" up my poor butt. Never again. |

Did you ever read my post about my horrible massage experience at then brand new Nail House? Pretty entertaining reading—bad, bad massage. Lesson learned. Nail place= bad massage. |

Found it in the Soapbox archive "A thread for Greenetree" Here is an excerpt, detailing the massage. No you're NOT alone! Posted on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 10:24 am: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ...About 10 minutes later the door opens and a man walks in. He sets a timer (TICK TICK TICK) and starts rubbing my back. I've only had a few massages in my life, but my 6 year old does a better job. He didn't have lotion or anything, but his hands are hot so it doesn't HURT, but it doesn't feel good either. I equated the massage to having sex with a teenage boy—he came at me hard and fast but he didn't touch anything that actually felt good. The buzzer went off and he continued for a few more minutes, finishing up a leg. Really, very little enjoyment, if any at all. Most of the time I was wishing I just stuck with the manicure pedicure, and waiting for something, anything to feel good. ... |

This guy was pretty rough as well. The only time I enjoyed it was when he used the hot rocks on my back - but then I started to wonder where those hot rocks had been, were they clean, etc. It was truly awful. Where then to get a decent, relaxing massage without feeling violated and without having to travel far? |

Natural balance is great. My wife goes there (I think the owner/operator's name name is Diane) all the time. I've been once. It was great. Diane also does massage part time (i.e., home games) for the New York Yankees (the actual players on the team)---so you can imagine she knows what she's doing. Of course, getting an appointment can be a bit of a challenge. Good luck.

FWIW, I recently got a message from Diane and agree with Mwoodwalk. She's very good... Libby uses Nate at the Chelsea Set two or three times a month. He does a deep tissue message, but not the butt. Well, so she says... |

The best massage therapist in the area, IMHO is Richard Meyer in Upper Montclair on Valley Road. It's only a 20-minute drive and ABSOLUTELY worth it. He's a certified massage therapist and a massage instructor at the Cittone Institute. He specializes in Swedish, but also recently started doing Thai massage as well. I've been seeing him since 1998 and swear that he's kept me sane ;-) Oh, and he also took a special cource to learn about pre-natal massage when I told him that I was trying to have a baby. Campbell, Mem give him a call. You won't regret it. Richard Meyer, CMT: 973-746-7132 |

Marian, ahemmm.. What is the Swedish? and what is the Thai? Somehow I don't see some man massaging my back with the heel and ball of his feet(while standing on my back). That's part of the Thai massage I distinctly remember. Of course that was in Bangkok and was in no way americanized. Dave may want to consider having a adult posting area for these topics. |

How much is Natural Balance for 1-hour Swedish? I just had a fabulous Swedish at Spa at Short Hills Hilton yesterday, and resolved to start getting them every three months or so, but it's $100 an hour there...a little pricey on a regular basis. I need to find a less expensive place and just start going regularly. |

Bio Skin Care on Millburn Ave. in Millburn. Jitka is the best, if she's still there! They used to be in Anthony Garubbo's before he expanded his salon and they moved out. |

If you're interested in a good massage and concerned about the price the Institute for Therapeutic Massage is a great. You're getting a full one-hour massage from their senior students for $30 plus a tip (usually $5). The main drawbacks: 1. It's a good hour away in Pompton Lakes. 2. You're not in a private room ... however the tables are separated by curtains and the room is really dark so I've never felt like privacy is an issue. 3. Cash only. All that being said it's been a great way for my wife and me to get a monthly massage (which is usually excellent but never bad) without shelling out a ton of dough. Here's a link for more info: http://www.massageprogram.com/clinic.html. Cheers! |

BillP, thanks, but I really need something much closer. Maplewood, Millburn or SO would be ideal. Any other ideas? |

Reflective, There is nothing sexual about Swedish or Thai massage when it is practiced by a responsible and professional massage therapist. Swedish massage is the "traditional" type of massage practiced in the West. It employs kneading, rolling and light "karate chopping" movements to loosen up the muscles. Aside from its therapeutic benefits, it is extremely relaxing and reduces stress. Thai massage, which I've only tried once is actually practiced on a floor mat with the client fully clothed. The therapist uses a combination of gentle yoga stretches, acupressure points, muscle massage and joint manipulation. I don't recall Richard standing on my back during the session. But, hey--to each his own.

I've had 2 massages at Bio Skin Care in Millburn. The first one was by a woman who is no longer there, the second was by Jitka and both were amazing. |
