Can't really hear anything. Sounds very faint and very far away. I will try on another CD player. |

I guess my biggest problem with the whole McCartney halftime show is the fact that it seemed like the guy showed up, played four songs he can play in his sleep, and that was it. No surprise guest musicians. Nothing challenging at all - they cut have put on a CD for the same effect. Couldn't even see the rest of the band. It's like someone called him the day before, said "Hey Paul, come on over and play a quick set and I'll give you free SuperBowl tickets" and Paul said "Okay, just let me change my t-shirt." Boring, boring, boring. And dull. |

1. This was a halftime show, why would you expect more than 4 or 5 songs? 2. Paul McCartney went out there and played 4 songs he created that were familiar to millions of people spanning 30 + years. No other living musician could even come close to achieving that. 3. What guest musician would want to appear when it's Paul's gig? Stevie Wonder? Elton John? Bono? This was a half-time show, not "We Are The World" Paul McCartney can rawk hard, have a good time and make it look like it's no big thang. Not bad for a senior citizen |

Joe, didn't even see it. And I'm curious how you drew that conclusion based on what I've posted. Could you explain? I liked the Aerosmith show the year before ... that was fun (and I'm not a huge Aerosmith fan either). I enjoy the Beatles but not a diehard, which I guess a lot of folks on this thread seem to be. I'll give Paul McCartney credit ... he's a gifted musician and has had a heck of a career. But to me this halftime show seemed like they were going for something so incredibly bland. I can also imagine some younger musicians would give one of their vocal cords for an opportunity to sing a duet with Sir Paul. I would've, but I can't imagine anyone would pay to see me sing. There's plenty of very talented young artists whose careers could be boosted by appearing with him in such a venue, who are genuine musicians and don't have to flash a boob to please the audience. |

Sbenois- Is he playing at the Garden or Meadowlands? A friend called me a couple of weeks ago to tell me he was going to be in concert. He thought it was the Summer.I heard it's the Fall. You have any idea when the concert is? Looks like I'll be going to McCartney along with U2 and the Eagles. Anyone from MOL going to get tickets? |

Just the Aunt, The Eagles are a group so they don't count as a single living musician. Plus, they don't come close to the range of music Paul McCartney has created. I love Springsteen, but take off your NJ goggles for a second and name 1 song that has the familiarity of "Hey Jude" to millions of people from 9-year-old kids to card-carrying AARP members. "Born in the USA" would be the closest, but I don't think that song has yet stood the test of time the way "Hey Jude" has. Still, it would have been a good half-time song too! Although with the mess overseas, "Born" might have sounded a tad jingoistic/sarcastic considering our current political climate and what side of the blue/red fence you're on.

Jingoistic? Born in the USA is anti-government, anti-establish protest song. It's really a Vietnam war protest song written after the fact.

Yea but Carl, the President, his Dad and Ronald Reagan still don't know that (well maybe if there is an afterlife someone finally explained it to Reagan). And someone started a thread asking why libs are dumb . |

My guess is that early October is when he'll be in the area. One show in MSG. I think there will probably be a show in the Meadowlands Arena and one in the Nassau Coliseum. Tour starts in mid September and ends in late November. 38 shows. The Eagles and Springsteen do not have anything close to the universal appeal of McCartney. McCartney and the Beatles are the only group to constantly be accepted by new generations of kids. In this regard, there's the Beatles and no one else.

Carl Thompson, yes, I get it (sigh) obviously you don't. Quick trip in the way back machine - Reagan wanted to use John Mellencamp's "Little Pink Houses" as a pro-middle class working class soundtrack for his campaign, the song was about anything but that. The road to Hell is paved with good anthems. You misinterpreted my point and jumped to explain the real meaning of "Born in the USA" I get it, you get it, but sung in a stadium to millions of people they might miss the nuance.

Wharf-Sorry to dissapoint you but I really don't know most of the people in the photos. I have met a lot of them and for a brief period knew Lou Reed who produced a demo for a group I was in called Get Wet. I also just finished co-producing a cd for my friend Jeff Salen and Tommy Ramone played guitar on it so I got to know him a little bit. The people I met (in clubs, on tour, in studios etc) and maybe said 1 or 2 words to are: Bo Didley, Robert Gordon, David Johansen (actually opened for the NY Dolls a couple of times, Johansen is a hysterically funny guy),Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, , Johnny winter, Mark Knopfler (met while I was on tour with Cherry Vanilla, Dire Straits didn't even have a rcord deal yet and were on tour with Wishbone Ash-nice guys), Sid Vicious,Wayne County, Paul Simon and Dee Dee Ramone (very nice but seemed mentally challenged). Sorry again for the thread drift. |

Lydia, I never saw much nuance in a line like,"Sent me off to a foreign land To go and kill the yellow man" The fact that it got past Reagan and his followers isn't a surprise to anyone, is it? But then I'm just a small town boy from the midwest, so maybe nuance ain't my thing. Sbenois, On mostly anecdoatal evidence of watching my teenage daughter and her friends, I'd say Eric Clapton is a distance second to McCartney in terms of cross-generational appeal. But you're right about groups like the Eagles and Springsteen. They're locked in the 70's and 80's.

Seems that very little has changed regarding the animosity that existed between Bruce and Baker. That's a shame. BTW, ever heard the Ginger Baker jazz album? Charlie Haden and Bill Frissell are bandmates. Not bad.

Wharfrat-Baker did an album with the Sweedish bass player Jonas Hellborg which is terrific (I like it better then the Haden/Frissell recording). He also put out an album with his own quintet made up with guys from his polo club in Colorado (I also hear he is a volunteer fireman in his town). I saw him play a duo show with Hellborg at Wetlands, just acoustic bass guitar and drums, great show. Baker is one of the few drummers who really uses the whole kit and avoids the standard hi-hat, bass drum, snare beats. |

Not sure but you can get them both from the Amazon marketplace. The CD with Hellborg is called Unseen Rain and the Quintet to Octet recording is called Coward of the County (my preference is the Hellborg recording, the quintet is a lot closer to a straight jazz recording). |
