Does anyone know if the Maplewood theater (or any nearby theater) does the matinee showings of movies that moms can bring their infants to? My friend & her baby attend these in CT and I was wondering if we had anything like it around here. Thanks! |

What does your question mean? Does it mean the audience is expected to tolerate crying, breastfeeding, etc.? I mean, nothing wrong with that. Sounds like a decent idea. I've just never heard of it. |

I think the Essex Green theater in West Orange has the matinees during the week where moms, dads or caregivers can bring infants. |

Loewes multiplex on Route 10 in East Hanover (opposite Costco) has (or did have) "Reel Moms" at certain times during the week. I'm sure that you will get info if you phone them, but I'm sure it was for shows during the daytime - an excellent idea to get people in on otherwise 'slow' times and for moms to relax knowing that the shows are for them and their little ones. (I guess stay-at-home dads are equally welcomed?) I have to say that it drives me nuts when I sometimes go to see a show at Jersey Gardens or on Rt 22 on say, a Friday or Saturday night and people are taking babies and toddlers in. They usually get bored and restless and start to cry out or ask loud questions. OK, I can understand that the parents might not be able to afford or get hold of an evening babysitter...but when my children were little I wouldn't have dreamed of taking them to the cinema in the evening. I would just rent a video instead. (I'm more annoyed that the cinema managers condone parents taking very small children in to see evening peak time shows, especially for brand new releases and at weekends....sigh). |

Check out Lowes on Route 10. About a year ago, when I was on maternity leave, they had "Reel Moms" on Tuesdays, I think at around 11 am. It was so enjoyable, and everyone knew what they were getting into - so no problem with an occasional crying baby, breastfeeding, or changing your baby's diaper in the aisle, etc. |

Tom- as I'm sure you've gathered from the responses, it's sometimes offered by a theater for moms or dads to bring little ones to a matinee showing of a particular movie once a week. I wouldn't dream of bringing the baby to a movie that wasn't billed as a "mommy and me" type showing. Why subject all those people to a screaming child? (and subject yourself to lots of dirty looks!!!) Thank you to all for the info. on the Loews theater on Rt. 10, I'm going to check it out. Rick B- congratulations, and good luck with the delivery. Sounds like our little ones may be in school together one day! |

I used to go to the Rt. 10 movies every week when i was home on maternity leave last year. It was a win-win all around. The theater never gets that kind of business at 11am otherwise, and new moms can always use new reasons to get out of the house. Many of us would go to lunch afterward as well - the Macaroni Grill across the street never had a problem acommodating a group of 8 moms and 8 babies! I only wish that Loewes would put a woman in charge of picking the movies. Collateral was interesting and all, but... it's not exactly a chick flick. I'm sure there are reasons why the maplewood theater doesn't do this, but i've always thought it would be the perfect place to host something similar. New moms are everywhere! And as for going to regular, "non-mom" movies, what i found was that my own baby went through phases - when he was little, he'd sleep through everything. Then as he got older, he needed to be bounced in the back of the theater for 102 minutes until he finally fell asleep as the end credits started rolling, or he was more interested in looking at himself in the mirror in the bathroom the whole time. (Other moms had kids that always remained still and quiet - not me.) If you know your child's temperment, it's not out of the question to go to regular matinee showings here and there, as long as you're prepared to leave if your child starts to fuss. Oh - and i did see dads, as well as grandparents at the Rt. 10 movies from time to time.
