From Drudge:

Last Friday when promoting social security reform with 'regular' citizens in Omaha, Nebraska, President Bush walked into an awkward unscripted moment in which he stated that carrying three jobs at a time is 'uniquely American.'

While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a 'mentally challenged' son.

The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that 'the promises made will be kept by the government.'

But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.

Begin transcript:

MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

You can just hear him chortling and snickering in the Beavis way of his, too.

It's absolutely amazing that "ordinary" red state Americans like this guy. Historians will be trying to figure this out for the next 200 years...

Hey, wait a minute. Bush was once on the board of three oil companies at once, and still found time to golf. He understands the american experience.

She should have asked him if he, "Wanted to buy any wood?". As Bugs would say, "What a maroon".

(rant)

When George 41 was surprised by a supermarket scanner, that was almost cute. It didn't have to do with policy or with people's basic needs.

When George 43 just slides over circumstances like this woman's with a joke (and yes, I can hear the snicker), the cluelessness is out of hand. And given his ideology, he's pretty much left without anything to say except congratulations (?!). (what? Go back to school in your free time? Get another job?)

Which of her 3 jobs do you suppose provides the medical insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and retirement savings she needs to keep her family afloat, given that the one child may be dependent on her all her life? How long will it be before she just wears out working 3 jobs and maybe putting off medical care?

I hope everything goes well for her, and she has a strong personal safety net of friends/family, because the way things are going in this country, she sure can't count on much else.

Lucky me, I'm not living her situation at this time; but if anything could make me embarrassed to be an American, it's this kind of thing.

(End of rant, fire away. I know I'm making a lot of assumptions here, but I doubt GW is even putting her life and needs "on the table.")

Not that I doubt for a minute that it really happened, but I did a search at the Drudge site and couldn't find the article. Could you post a link please?

Thanks. Odd that the audience would laugh like that; they were probably this woman's friends and neighbors.

Bottom line is that GW is out of touch with working people and with the middle class in this country. Too much hanging around with the guys who bought his oil company from him and who funded his purchase of the Texas Rangers. Nice to have rich friends who pay your way, vs your dad's influence.

Bush is truly out of touch with reality. Seriously. Given his alcohol and drug abuse, I am not surprised that he is. The man cannot think straight, cannot speak coherently and cannot be part of "reality-based community" even if he wanted to.

C'mon, Bush fans, let's have your take on this. Making a joke at the expense of a woman who has to work 3 jobs to support her kids, one of whom is developmentally disabled? (Oh how I wish she had responded to his "Get any sleep?" with "No. Do you?"). Remind me why you voted for that stinking pile of breathing s***?

If I had a buck for every time he said something that made me slap my forehead in disbelief and make me wonder how I'll ever explain to my kid how this imbecile got elected twice....
