Oh millie, how horrifying for you. Gosh, what a way to ruin your day. Hopefully they bought your explanation and thought nothing more of it. |

Actually, since he was "self-pleasuring" its kind of hard to know his sexual orientation! I remember a few years ago a guy deciding the tree behind my house was a good place to relieve himself (urinely speaking!) -- on the golf course -- despite the fact that my child was in the back yard. Some screaming, while holding a hedge clipper in my hands, sent him running. I can still hear my next door neighbor snickering about it. |

Barb, That was part of my point...the person's sexual orientation is not noticeable or relevant in the scenario described in the original post...what police say the park is used for is also irrelevant. And it wasnt a case of consenting adults or one adult who felt the call of nature while out enjoying nature in some secluded park. As described, this person was noticed by a group of people including children, and didnt stop or seem to react to that. If Im by myself, and saw no families around, Id ignore it. Its a different dynamic when you have kids around though. |

I don't buy that Sarge. Whatever you do in the privacy of your home is your business but , I'd doubt you would find many posters defending these creeps right to publicly expose themselves. A lot of horrible things happened in, "The Good Old Days" and went un-checked because people just didn't want to talk about it. |

Millie, I suggest you talk to your daughters. Quickly changing the subject probably told them, overtly or subtlely, that it's a forbidden topic, making it hard for them to ask about it. That stuff gets buried deeply. Tell them you were taken aback and didn't have your wits to address it at the time. That's my parenting advice, worth about half of what you paid for it. |

It was probably one of the frustrated Hetero Married guys who live in SOMA that don't get any at home. He just wanted to get nude, enjoys the heatwave we had over the weekend, and take care of business with his new ish of Hustler or Playboy.... |

I don't care about sexual orientation - it is disgusting and illegal. I don't want to see it myself and I certainly don't want my kids to see it. I'd call the cops or do something. I don't know what. If my husband was with our kids and encountered a guy like that, I think he'd have someting to say to the guy. |

A man who exposes himself in front of children has to be taken very seriously. This is no joke. I was at the reservation with my boys this weekend. I've never seen anything like that and I prefer not to. Next time I go I'll be sure to have a camera and cell phone. |

I go to the reservation in the company of my very large dog, always on leash, but always prepared to protect me and my family. When one sees what you described, one should grab the cell phone and dial the SO or MAP Police. Let them take care of the situation. |

I agree with Hank. I would probably just pelt him with rocks, though. I wouldn't want to have to get to close to him to kick his ***. For all I know, he could be close to doing you-know-what. I guess then I could kick his *** with no fear since it would have been him that assaulted me first. |

hank, so its ok with you to have a possible sexual predator doing whatever in public view in the reservation as long as there are no children around? there are many victims of sex crimes who are not children. what the police say is not irrelevant. i mean lets face the officers who work the west side of south orange, whatever post in maplewood it is covered by and the county officers have more expierence then i would say most people who live in and use the reservation as to what goes on their. the police are their the most and see with and deal with much more of this unpleasant situation then i would venture to say most people on this board unless if you spend a massive amount of time in south mountain. |

Wow...now this guy is a sexual predator? Were the trees his prey? Yeah, it's a shame and disturbing that he didn't even care that people stumbled upon him but it's not like he went searching for someone to flash. There's definately a difference. |

e roberts, maybe I wasnt clear but I was making a distinction between a person or persons engaging in an activity at the risk of being seen versus someone engaging in an activity for the purpose of being seen..and yes, if they knowingly and willingly do it in the presence of children, I believe you ratchet up the seriousness of it. And the irrelevance of what the police say refers to the follow-up comments by some saying police say its a "gay pick-up area"...there is a potential implication in those comments on the heels of the initial post that I find unfair. A creep is a creep, regardless of sexual orientation, not because of it. |

Well it is a gay cruising area. No use beating around the bush. Which makes absolutely no difference as to the unacceptability of the conduct. The mom or pop with the kids has to scurry away from the creep in the public park just a few feet from a road? Not this mom. I pulled in the car once next to a creep with a boy porn mag propped up on his steering wheel. When I saw what he was doing, I screamed at him so everyone around could know it, too. Shaming them is probably impossible, but it's good to try. |

i can not believe this. i go to the reservation almost once a week. its not to pick up men or women, but to excercise my dog! This is disgusting. If I were to come across this, the guy would definitely have been outed. i like the rocks throwing idea, but if I threw a rock, no doubt my girl would go out and try to retrieve. Not sure what she would come back with though. We need to take ownership of this problem, if you see some strange stuff going on, get a little closer, make the wrong-doers react to your presence (if your in position to do so and without children). i was really surprised also to hear about this pick up area? What part of the reservation are we talking here? I am not even aware of places where you can drive in more than 50 or a 100 feet, let alone driving trails? |

Rick B this happened by the lookout. Basically right out in the open. Because I was with my children we left quickly but if I was alone I would of said or done something but i didnt want to draw too much attention to it with my chidren there. |

I heard about this from friends/neighbors when we first moved into Maplewood some years ago. I consulted the liberal Mr. W about this, since one of the reasons we moved here was the proximity to the reservation. He very nicely asked me not to go there alone/with the kid, and I still don't. I'm not a fearful person, and I will go many places by myself. I do recognize though, that a situation can turn against me -- and I'm not the biggest, strongest person around. So, I normally only go with Mr. W as my bodyguard. On other days, I just go to the gym. It's such a pity not to be able to enjoy the reservation all the time. |
