Oh you!

I liked seeing S at Costco - plus the orchids for $19.99.

Oh, and I also love those black bold gel pens - they write so flowingly and permenantly.

I never see Lydia at Costco. I only see my neighbor Frank. To run into Lydia I have to go to Fresh Fields.

I always find cheaper paper goods at ShopRite in WO. However, there's always a deal at Costco on something else--detergent, dishwasher soap, bell peppers, men's jeans, frozen Empire chicken breasts, juice packs.

My 5 y-o daughter makes stuff constantly out of paper and tape. Anything she can think of, she draws, cuts out, and assembles in three dimensions. She goes through tape like... I can't even describe it. I mean, she has it horded and stashed away for her own personal use, and woe betide anyone else who needs some. We might have financed a new division at 3M by now were it not for bulk, low-priced tape at Costco.

I just bought a flat screen TV/VCR/DVD there for less money than it cost to buy a (smaller) TV five or six years ago from Circuit City (wherein I will never step foot again).

Sbenni, thanks for confirming my hunch about prices being lower during the week. I go to Costco too infrequently to have figured out which day(s) the sales occcur on, but I've been grousing to my husband since at least 1996 that I thoought the prices went up on weekends.

Reading that post again I can see how I may have given the wrong impression so here goes again...

On Mondays/Tuesdays, Costco marks down items that they are going to discontinue selling. These items are designated with prices ending with a 7. I saw a leather couch there that was $899 on a Saturday. I went the following Monday and they had two left - at $499.97.

Another trick for those of you who save your receipts (if you haven't grasped this fact yet: Costco receipts are essentially LIFETIME WARRANTIES) is that if you see a markdown of an item, they'll give you the difference if you bring in the receipt within 30 days.

Here's another one, this time OfficeMax. OfficeMax has this bizarro upgrade policy that calls for them to give you a better product if the one they advertise is out of stock. And for some reason, OfficeMax is always out of sync with their suppliers when their Sunday ads go into effect.

So if you go to their stores on a Sunday morning, you'll very often find that they're selling really good 5 or 7 megapixel cameras for the price of a 3.1. And when they do these upgrades, because the rebates they offer won't work, they give you the rebates as a discount. Immediately. It's just hysterical. I've seen people go right to the customer service area and ask boldly "hey, what's on THE SUBSTITUTION LIST?" THE CS people smile and take it out laughing.

And on top of it they send out $30 off $150 coupons if you sign up on their website. They even honor Staples coupons. By the time you're done you can get just outrageous deals on things.

Lordy Sbenni, that's some fine info you passed on.

Much obliged. I'm going to visit Costco on Mondays and Tuesdays now, all prior receipts clutched tightly in hand.

My mother bought a leather sofa, love seat, chair and half and ottoman at costco for 2,900.00. Two weeks later she gets the bloomingdales Furniture Catalog. In the catalog was the same set same company for 5,800.00 minus the ottoman. We happen to be at Riverside Square Mall and stopped in Bloomingdales to see if the set was the same. Sure enough it was so we asked the salesman why the price difference he told us that the set they had was a special package made only for Bloomingdales. We told the guy about the Costco price and he really didnt have an answer. Grant it Bloomingdales may have a higher overhead but almost 3,000.00 more for the same item is crazy

sbenois - thanks for the scoop! but don't advertised specials typically start on sundays when the new circulars come out with the paper? If so, i'd think that sunday morning would be the worst time to look for substitution deals, no?

I never see Lydia at Costco or Whole Foods but my brother does see her from time to time at Whole Foods so it's a timing thing.

I love Costco especially their meat dept and their baby clothing but it is weird that Similac is actually cheaper at Drug Fair so I am going to check other things too like diapers, toilet paper etc.. will advise.

We too worship at the church of Costco. I go in for a loaf of bread (not entirely joking -- their "Innkeeper's Bread" is simply the best multigrain bread I've ever had) and end up walking out with $1,000 worth of electronics, dishes, leather jackets, tools, you name it. The prices are fantastic on the groceries, and once you go there a few times -- and leave with a dumptruck full of nongrocery items -- you'll see how they can afford to do it.

Stores such as Drug Fair and most supermarket chains have advertised specials that they actually price below cost to get you in the store. I am sure if you want to go to ten supermarkets and five discount drug emporiums you can probably beat Costco's prices on individual papergoods, baby formula and other items. However, do you really want to spend your life checking ads and driving all over three counties?

I just wish Costco had an EXPRESS checkout.. i.e. 3 items or less... for those times I run in and pick up a cake, veggie platter, or just want to get the newest DVD.

Like I said, Office Max is usually out of sync with their suppliers so Sunday morning the odds are that they'll be unable to give you what was advertised. Later in the week, howeer, they do get in sync so chnces are better that they'll have the items in stock.

Here's a great example. This week they have a Western Digital External 120gb hard drive - USB2.0 for $70 after $80 in rebates.

But none of the stores have them. Each was given only five or ten at most. They were gone by 10:30 Sunday morning. They immediately began substituting IOMEGA external drives, 160gb, for $70 with no mail in rebates. And there were plenty of $15 off $75 coupons out there. So if you bought some paper for five bucks, you got that and a bigger drive for $60 on site, no mail-in rebate.

Tom - I've seen you!

I saw you on New Years' Day at the Woman's club and I was going to go up to you and say hi but I (truly) got all flustered. It was a local celebrity moment (I've only seen you in your picture) and I didn't know what to say besides that and I like your posts.

JCrohn - I'm with you on the survivalist tape hoarding, I have 2 shoeboxes full of tape refills and I still feel like I'm running out.

One item hoarding runs in my family. My father stashes lightbulbs. We had an extra bathroom that was unusable for years because the bathtub was so full of lightbulbs from Odd Job.

You just gave me a long laugh, Lydia.

My 13 year old read that and said, "Oh my God, that's so sweet!"

Please, I'm not a celebrity. I'm usually rather soft-spoken. Please introduce yourself. Or we'll eventually meet at Carmelita's, I guess.

Next time I see you I'll muster up my courage - I can talk to people but,um...whatever.

I'm shy when it comes down to it.

Not that shy I suppose or I wouldn't post this!

Looking forward to meeting you in person Tom!

Lyrics to Lydia, The Tatooed Lady

My life was wrapped around the circus. Her name was Lydia.

I met her at the world's fair in 1900, marked down from

1940. Ah, Lydia.

She was the most glorious creature

Under the su-un.

Guiess. DuBarry. Garbo.

Rolled into one.

Oooooooh

Lydia oh Lydia, say have you met Lydia,

Lydia, the Tatooed Lady.

She has eyes that folks adore so,

And a torso even more so.

Lydia oh lydia, that encyclopedia,

Oh Lydia the Queen of Tatoo.

On her back is the Battle of Waterloo.

Beside it the wreck of the Hespherous, too.

And proudly above waves the Red, White, and Blue,

You can learn a lot from Lydia.

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

When her robe is unfurled, she will show you the world,

If you step up and tell her where.

For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paris,

Or Washington crossing the Delaware.

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Oh Lydia oh lydia, say have you met Lydia,

Oh Lydia the Tatooed Lady

When her muscles start relaxing,

Up the hill comes Andrew Jackson

Lydia oh Lydia, that encyclopedia,

oh Lydia the queen of them all!

For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz,

With a view of Niagara that nobody has.

And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz.

You can learn a lot from Lydia.

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Come along and see Buff'lo Bill with his lasso.

Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso.

Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon.

Here's Godiva but with her pajamas on.

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Here is Grover Whalen unveilin' the Trilon.

Over on the West Coast we have Treaure Island.

Here's Najinsky a-doin' the rhumba.

Here's her social security numba.

{whistles

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia that encyclopedia,

Oh Lydia the champ of them all.

She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet.

The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat.

And now the old boy's in command of the fleet,

For he went and married Lydia.

I said Lydia {He said Lydia}

I said Lydia {We said Lydia}

La La!}

Gee Whiz - thanks Gemini...

thanks Anon too (I think)

I had a 78 rpm of "Lydia the tattooed Lady" when I was little (flip side was "Stop! It's wonderful!) but I stepped on it while I was cleaning my room and it broke. (Wah)

Be well and choose well, all.
