Lots of people recommend iTunes, but I'd rather not download the software if there is somewhere else with a better selection. Where do you all get your music?

I don't think that any legal program is better than iTunes.

When you download the latest free version of QuickTime, you get iTunes along with it. It's a big download, but hey - it's FREE!

There are people who create blogs that list all of the free music around the internet. Go to google and try "free music blog" and see what you find. A lot of artists (many that you have heard of) will have a free promotional download, sometimes live recordings, sometimes the hit song on the album, sometimes some other obscure track, etc.

I read an article in the NYTimes regarding the phenomenon. Supposedly there are some really great music download blogs out there.

Many bands actually like that fact that people listen to their music and allow them to download live material for free. The Grateful Dead is one of those bands. I don't know if any of these bands are up your alley, but you might check out these sites offering free music downloads.

Also, there is a prorgam call Futhurnet which allows you to browse through thousands of artists' live material. http://www.furthurnet.com/downloadarea/
I'm very lucky that the artist that I listen to aren't greedy ***holes. I know that I can download as much live material as I want and never have to worry about the police breaking down my door and giving me a $500,000 fine from the nice people at the RIAA.
