Go to google and try "free music blog" and see what you find. A lot of artists (many that you have heard of) will have a free promotional download, sometimes live recordings, sometimes the hit song on the album, sometimes some other obscure track, etc. I read an article in the NYTimes regarding the phenomenon. The Grateful Dead is one of those bands. I don't know if any of these bands are up your alley, but you might check out these sites offering free music downloads. http://www.nugs.net http://www.gdlive.com Also, there is a prorgam call Futhurnet which allows you to browse through thousands of artists' live material. http://www.furthurnet.com/downloadarea/ I'm very lucky that the artist that I listen to aren't greedy ***holes. I know that I can download as much live material as I want and never have to worry about the police breaking down my door and giving me a $500,000 fine from the nice people at the RIAA.
