Last night around 10:30 there were three distinct pops of a gun firing on or around Ridgewood, two blocks below Marty's. I called 911 as did several others in the neighborhood. Police were here in less than a minute as they were up the street checking out a party. The police argeed, that based on all the reports, they were indeed gun shots, not fireworks. I know the sound of gun shots verses fireworks. They were very close and you could almost feel the percussion. Did anyone else hear this in the area? Also, has anyone heard anything about this? The police were up and down the street for about an hour after.

Yes, I heard them. I'm about 5 blocks away from Marty's. I wasn't sure if they were gun shots or fireworks, but I thought it didn't sound like fireworks. I had the TV on and I think I fell asleep as I only heard 2 shots.

Is "below" Marty's towards Millburn or South Orange?

Gunshots in Maplewood? I find that hard to believe, especially on the Maplewood Ave side of town. This is the type of activity that one would associate with the west side near DeHart Park. I'm sure that this was a "once in a million" event. Probably won't even make the police blotter.

Heard it was near DeHart road. Maybe they confused the party address with DeHart Park??
Hmmmm.

Absolutly not fireworks, gun shots.
Anyway, the party the police were checking on was at the Maplewood Tennis Club. Does anyone know what was going on there last night? There was an incident last year involving an assualt, also on this street, when someone had a teen party of some kind at that club.

I have no idea what that means.

Why doesn't everybody elaborate on the facts they have?

"Kung Hei Fat Choy" = "Happy New Year" In Chinese. Ergo, Fireworks. Ergo, Over-Reaction. Ergo, Provincial Jerseyites.

-s.

BTW: Did anyone wish a Happy New Year to the nice folks at their local Chinese take-out places tonight when they picked up dinner? Just wondering...

I did (wish a happy new year) , when we ordered lunch delivery on Tuesday. (Which I know was really New Year's Eve Day)... even gave the delivery guy his tip in a hung bao (red packet). - Boy was he surprised when this Xie Fang Ren (Westerner) gave him a red envelope.

PS. I would think fireworks would be more than just three loud pops.

Way to go with the assumptions, Njphilf. "You'd expect it from on the "other side of town"". What are you implying?

Actually, it was gunshots, and it was the Maplewood Border Patrol having a firefight with another nail salon trying to sneak in and set up shop in town.

Lunar New Year is a 15 day holiday so the fact that the official start was Feb 9th means nothing in terms of when parties might occur.

Gong Xi!

They were so obviously fireworks. the first two were like simultaneous. Plus they had a hollow snapping sound, very unlike a gun's popping sound.

Can we end this thread so we don't have to look at the erroneous "Gun shots" all the time, when they were so obviously fireworks ?
No need to continue this negative impression of our village ..

Did you ever think that the fireworks were used to mask the sound of gunshots?
I suppose none of you ever watched "Murder She Wrote."

Handgun fire sounds like a flat pop. Firecrackers have a fuller sound, at least to my tin ear.

You could hear the reverb of the pavement. I suspect they were thrown from a moving car in front of Gefken Florist or thereabouts. I noted them, and thought "were those gunshots?" but then I realized they sounded exactly like firecrackers, and they came in too fast a succession.
