If you haven't heard about it, -Cristo's Gates starts Sat in Central Park. All 20+ miles of paths in Cental Park will be adorned with "Saffron Gates" for a couple of weeks only. I'm going to check it out this weekend or sometime next week. -Curious to hear what other people will think of it. |

I'd rather go through the gates of Hell than that hell of gates. |

Great, then I at least know I won't have to see Cato there. Personally, I can't wait--it will be awesome. |

I saw him wrap the Pont Neuf in Paris. I didn't think it was going to be anything great but it was absolutely spectacular. http://www.christojeanneclaude.net/pn.html Cato, do you hate everything? |

I'm sour on Christo too. He was the invited speaker at my doctoral graduation. He didn't bother to address us at all - not a word of encouragement about making the world a better place with our shiny new Ph.D.s in education and psychology. You would have thought he was invited to speak to a bunch of his fans about his recently won battle over approval for the Central Park thing. Obnoxious. |

rumors abound: [1] Bloomberg paid the tab or a big chunk of the tab for the project ($20 million?) [2] The arches will be sold or auctioned off after the exhibit. |

I am thrilled about The Gates! I went earlier this week and saw them being put up and it was wonderful. Cato: Why do you not like them? I am truly interested in your point of view, so please tell us or PL me, if you prefer. Dave: The artists say that they pay for the whole thing and that all of the materials will be recycled when taken down. Runon: He was the invited speaker, agreed to speak and then didn't speak? That is incredible! What did he do instead of speak? Did he even show up? Supposedly, the roof sculpture garden at the Met will open so people can see the entire installation. the orange fabric waving in the wind, 23 miles worth!! I am sure that this will be really memorable--definitely go see it and take your kids and parents!! Be well, all. David Buckley |

What a waste of money! Something like $35 MILLION DOLLARS!!! Do you know how many people this could have feed? There are many other better uses for this amount of money then some display in Central Park that took 25 years to build. |

I've heard more than one person make that gates-price-tag-to-feed-the-poor comparison. Just think, the annual budget to run the many art museums in NYC is probably a staggering number. Would you consider that money wasted? I'm going today. Master Plvmber |

Looks like a great way to brighten up Central Park during the gray winter. I'm planning to go on a lunch hour this week. Also, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) will be in town next week to tour the town & venues for the 2012 bid. They will be staying at the Plaza in rooms overlooking Central Park. Nice timing! |

Just saw it today. Absolutely spectacular. Once in a lifetime event. You have to go there to have any appreciation for how gorgeous it is. We'll probably go again. |

An amazing event. As interesting as it was to see all the arches themselves it was actually much more interesting to see and consider that the HUGE numbers of people that came out were all there for this "art thing". Helicopters overhead, digital cameras everywhere, tour groups having the thing explained to them, joggers, bikers, families, everybody talking about all the details, -23 miles, 7,500 arches etc. Christo and Jean Claude cruised slowly around in the back of some groovy car with a police escort and crowds applauded as they went by. Artist(s) as rock stars, -I think the first of such popular media attention since Warhol. It was like a VERY busy New York day in Central Park and some sort of art-Disneyland put together. PS: Christo and his wife raised ALL the money themselves with the sale of collages and drawings of the project. -I doubt that drawings of orange arches could have been sold to "feed the poor".
