TEHRAN, Iran - An unknown aircraft fired a missile on Wednesday in a deserted area near the southern city of Dailam in the province of Bushehr where Iran has a nuclear power plant, Iranian state television said.

"A powerful explosion was heard this morning on the outskirts of Dailam in the Bushehr province. Witnesses said that the missile was fired from an unknown plane 12 miles from the city," Iran's Arabic language Al-Alam said, according to Reuters.

Separately, the Associated Press quoted an Iranian Interior Ministry spokesman, who said that he could not confirm reports that anti-aircraft fire has been shot off near an Iranian nuclear facility.

And Reuters reported an Israeli security source, who denied any Israeli involvement in the reported explosion.

Iran's Russian-built 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactor, its only nuclear power plant, is due to start operating in Bushehr province in late 2005.

The latest is that it may have been a fuel tank dropped from an Iranian aircraft while anti aircraft fire was directed at a drone. All info is from Iran TV.

Doesn't a fuel tank dropped from a plane at the same time the Iranians are firing at a drone sound a little, well, contrieved?

I am not saying that there is anything to the story, but, heck a real newshound like Straw would normally be a little suspicious of the Iranian explanation.

This wouldn't be our Air Force. Our SOP is to send in the F117s at night to knock out anti-aircraft sites and then send in a strike package. However, those fun guys and gals in the Israeli Air Force might approach it differently since they don't have stealth technology.

Meanwhile, from the BBC web site:

Iran and Syria say they are to form a common front to face challenges and threats from overseas.
"We are ready to help Syria on all grounds to confront threats," Iranian Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref said after meeting Syrian PM Naji al-Otari.

Does this mean the US is going to stop outsourcing its torture to Syria?

Other, less smart people, might dismiss news of this kind, but according to this report the incident, whatever it turns out to be, "sent the price of oil rising."

ahh..now it's the market you're worried about. Not the U.S. starting an unprovoked war in Iran. I guess based on that we can conclude you support The U.S decision not to enter Kyoto as well.

because that could negatively effect the u.s markets. (You do realize this?)
