In case you are wondering, you can drive a white rental van through the Lincoln and Midtown tunnel, and then back again the other way as a single male driver, and not attract even a glance from any law enforcement agent with 50 feet of your car. Not even racial profiling. I was surprised. This was a big cargo van with no side windows. |

It's not even like I'm blond or anything. From 100 feet, I could be anybody. |

By the way - as Tim McVeigh (sp?) prooves, terrorists can be all-American types. |

No, stoop, but I assumed it was the defacto operation at security points. My point is there wasn't even a level of scrutiny sufficient for the cops to determine I was not of interest. I could have been satan with dynamite strapped to my head. This isn't a political point, but I was a little surprised. |

It's better this way, themp. Truly effective security at checkpoints would be much too intrusive. And they would be enormously inconvenient to absolutely everyone. |

I don't disagree. Walk around Grand Central and think what someone could do. We live in an open society. It is funny that we had all that showy security for a while and now none. I lived in Manahattan during 9/11, and it was of course very "secure" for a few months. Now a few cops here and there are trying to stay watm and not die of boredom while cars stream by. |
