I'm going to China next week - Shanghai and Beijing for work, and will have a little time to be a tourist. Anyone have any suggestions, tips, things to see or avoid? I have a couple of things in mind (including a trip to the great wall), but with limited time -- 1 day in Shanghai as a tourist and about 3 in Beijing, I want to spend my time wisely...

Thanks!

Shanghai is very crowded and business-oriented. Not many sights there, so 1 day is enough.

Beijing: Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Tian Tan, and the Great Wall (Ba Da Ling section). If you can fit all those in, you've done well.

Make sure you hit Tianimin Square in Beijing (right across from Forbidden City) and while you're there go see Chairman Mao (I kid you not his body is on display right there, kinda creepy but interesting). Also hit the silk and pearl markets in Beijing for some great bargains (and do bargain don't pay the 1st price quoted).

I loved Shanghai - much more than Beijing. Shanghai was more about just strolling around, soaking in the atmosphere. Enjoy!
