Visit the schools.

Talk to people who have children in the schools.

Talk to a few children who attend the schools.

Go to the New Jersey Department of Education's website and look up the test scores for the schools you're interested in.

Since the SOMSD is very diverse in income and in race, one of its strengths imho, it is probably a good idea when reviewing the state statistics to click on the "details" and view the scores based on sex, special ed, race, etc.

Go to some elementary school events. These are organized by the PTA and you can get the contact numbers from websites accessible through maplewoodonline.com. People are usually in a more relaxed mood, especially at the outdoor events in the Spring. Most of us would be happy to talk with you.
