ok...so how many of your lefties write "upside down".. we were all taught to turn our paper to the left.. which meant lefties had to turn our hand upside down to write.. and get pencil all over the side of our hands as they slid across the page. My 4th grade teacher made me turn my paper to the right.. I had to learn to write all over again - but today I'm glad she did it. |

When righties write in Hebrew script, do they have to turn their hands upside down to write? |

A doctor friend who is knowledgeable in genetics once explained the basics of handedness to me. There are four broad categories (these are my terms, not his): hardcore right, right dominant over left, left dominant over right, and hardcore left. The middle two groups represent those who are more ambidextrous, especially with two-handed activities like batting or golf. This comports with my own anecdotal experience. My brother and I (the only kids in the family) are both left-handed, while our parents are both right-handed. I’m fairly ambidextrous in anything other than writing or throwing. My brother, however, is a hardcore lefty. At an early age I adjusted to using silverware in the right-handed position. Otherwise, our family would have had two out of four throwing their elbows in the opposite directions. It was no big deal for me to switch, but he never could have. But here’s a twist. For years I could never get the hang of using chopsticks. I always tried with my left had, of course. Then one day I picked up chopsticks with my right hand and it was as if I’d been doing it all my life. Go figure. The language is, indeed, troubling. In Latin, sinister is the root for both left and evil, while dexter means right. Hence, ambidextrous means two right hands. I have always had a view similar to Sbenois, namely that being left-handed is one way for the Good Lord to identify a few of his favorite souls here in the mortal plane. BTW, in addition to Paul McCartney, let’s don’t forget that Jimi Hendrix was also a lefty.

Nancy, our cat is clearly left-pawed. She bats with only her left paw. My ex-wife and I are both right-handed, though she is rather right-dominant-over-left, as Tom Carlson would put it. Both of our daughters are left handed. I watch lefties work with fascination, and I guess I wanted to be one. It's been interesting teaching them various things, such as using a kitchen knife. They can't use either kind of scissors in either hand effectively. I wish I had taught them to use their right hands early, because it took forever to find lefty scissors, and by then, it was too late. Most lefties I have asked use righty scissors in their right hands. When I was young, I worked as a bicycle mechanic and had to operate a screwdriver in cramped positions, so I am equally good at that with both hands. I had a lefty waitress who wrote completely upside down. That's a novel approach to the smearing problem! She told me it's the only way she writes. Well, if she has to write on a {black|white}board, I guess she writes rightside up.

I don't write upside down. I turn the paper so that it's slanted to the right. The only bad thing is that if I use a pen with cheap ink, the side of my left hand gets all smeared with ink as I move it across the page. In school, I had trouble with those desks that are designed for righties. I had to sit sideways, and I was always dropping things. |

ALL cats are left-pawed, I believe. I'm lefty for writing, mouse and carrying things. I throw, bat and play instruments right-handed. Interestingly, Ringo Starr is left-handed but plays a right-handed kit. He says that it's (at least part) of the reason for some of the more interesting things about his playing style. |

Lizzie - if you are getting ink on your hand, you're writing upside down. My 4th grade teacher made me hold my pencil in the same manner the other kids did - which is why I had to learn to write all over again, but am grateful (no ink on any part of my hand). |

I'm lefty (in handedness only). Use a mouse righty, scissors righty, switch hitter. Also, please note that since the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, only left-handers are always in their right mind.

My husband is the opposite of Jamie and Sgt. Pepper: He eats and writes right-handed, but bats and golfs lefty. He claims he's right-footed -- if he were to play soccer or pole vault, the right foot would be dominant. I am hard-core right-handed; both our kids are hard-core lefties. |

pencil: left scissors: right computer mouse: either frisbee: right fork: left (knife: right) Speaking of utensils... I had no idea until recently that so many people use their dominant hand for both the fork and the knife. Somehow, I had never noticed people putting their fork into their other hand to use a knife. How many of you do this? |
