According to:

http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/essex/index....62091370240.xml

(Pathmark article is the second article)

Pathmark closing after 29-year run

WEST ORANGE: The Pathmark supermarket in West Orange will close its doors on Feb. 25, after nearly 30 years selling groceries in the township.

...company spokesman Rich Savner said the 40,000-square-foot store space was no longer large enough to accommodate the supermarket chain's needs or compete with the larger ShopRite supermarket down the street.

... pharmacy has closed and he said that shelves will be sparse for the next week as the store tries to unload its remaining stock.

Township officials said they are working with the shopping center's landlord to bring in a new business to take Pathmark's place, preferably another supermarket. One retailer being discussed is Whole Foods Market, a Texas-based supermarket chain specializing in natural and organic foods.

Interesting. Just to reiterate, it's the WEST Orange Pathmark--the one on Prospect. (When I read this at first, I thought it was the one in SO on Valley St.)

The one in South Orange is about the same size, isn't it? Do you think it might be next?

I have no idea, Taylor M... I would think not, because there is no other large supermarket nearby, as there is with the West Orange PM (which while not nearby, has the Essex Green Shoprite as competition).

I did like that the WO PathMark used to be open 24/7 -- good place to run in for medicine at 9 pm on a Sunday night.

The S.O. Pathmark shares a parking lot with the A&P, a supermarket of comparable size.

My mom just told me they're going to put a Walmart where the West Orange Pathmark is. I told her "No way" because there is a Kmart right there." My mom insists it's true and said employees of Sears were talking about it. Anyone else hear this?

Wouldn't a Wegman's be perfect there?

Walmart requires a 16+ acre site for a 75,000-100,000 square foot store. Wegmans also needs close to this. As noted above, even most "traditional" grocery stores these days look for 50,000-55,000 square foot stores, plus large parking fields. For those of us who hate Home Depot in Union, Lowes also needs 55,000 square feet of store space.

On the other hand, Walmart does not worry about K-Mart being anywhere near them. Walmart assumes they will beat the pants off of their competitors, and they usually are right. For what it is worth, Lowes purposefully looks to locate near existing Home Depots.

so , if the eyeglass place and a liquor store (which I think are the only 2 stores between Kmart and Pathmark) could be relocated, *IS* the building large enough to meet the needs for a Walmart, Lowes, or Wegmans?

Millie-
Funny you mention the KMart will also close! I told my mom the only way they'd have enough room for a Walmart is for the rest of the stores in the stripe mall to close.

Where does that leave Wendy's and the liguor store?

How many people remember the old KMart being Korvettes? Then Caldor? Then Bradlees? Before it became KMart?

I remember Korvettes and Caldor's I dont think there was ever a Bradlees in that space but I could be wrong. My mother lives in West Orange and she heard that the K-Mart was closing also.

Well, since Kmart and Sears are merging does that make sense? Would they open a Sears where Kmart already exists, or once was?

If a Wal-Mart goes in there (West Orange) will they leave Crescent golf range alone? I don't know how close they'll put their stores.

They could take Wendy's -- but leave Staples and Rag Shop alone! I wouldn't mind a SuperWalmart or a Wegman's - tocompete with Essex green Shoprite... then I wouldn't have to go to Livingston for groceries (I don't go to the EG Shoprite) .

Kmart was a Caldor immediately prior to becoming a KMart. I do not believe a Bradlees was ever there.

I'm pretty sure there was a Bradlees for a few years.

It is just staggering to me that all around us - West Orange, Orange, East Orange and even Newark there are new grocery stores going in - new multi-use buildings going up and here in South Orange we get excuses about developers agreements, and other such nonesense. Arrrggghhh!!
