Where else? In Spam-a-lot.

My better half gave me tickets for Christmas for last night's performance (still in previews but you wouldn't know it from the crowd). The place was utterly packed with people of all ages.

I must admit I was apprehensive going in ... after the success of "The Producers" I was afraid maybe someone just decided to slap together some music and the plot and costumes of "Holy Grail" and throw it up on stage knowing legions of Python faithful would flock to the theatre. Well, I was pleasantly relieved. Yes, it's primarily based on the movie but they've freshened it up with a ton of fun musical numbers and terrific performances.

I'll happily go see anything David Hyde Pierce is in on Broadway after this ... he's got great comic timing that works as well on stage as it did in "Frasier." Hank Azaria is a lot of fun playing all of John Cleese's roles, with his mastery of wacky accents. There's also a bravura performance by Sara Ramirez as the Lady of the Lake ... a part written for the show for which IMHO Ms. Ramirez deserves a Tony nomination.

Tim Curry took a little time to warm up ... he was missing some of that earnest sincerity which made Graham Chapman's King Arthur the anchor of a very silly movie.

Lots of big and clever production numbers, other bits of Pythonia thrown in for devotees, an appearance by the almighty himself. Everything a show needs. And the audience howled. It could be that a lot of us Python-heads are packing the previews, but everyone in that audience was having a riotously good time.

I hearily recommend "Spam-a-lot" and wonder if I'll get to see it again!

We have tickets for June for the whole family. The little ones wanted to know if it would be funny like "Jack and the Beans Talk" that they saw in Maplewood!
