We don't have kids, and we come from NYC so my wife and I are used to having late night eats. We both fortunately work 10AM-6PM and often have to work late. After I catch the train and then the latest jitney (which IMO isn't late enough) we get home at 8PM. If I relax for even just a few minutes at home, there often isn't enough time to make it to any of the local restaurants. What are our options then? Cook? I've done that tons of times and ended up eating close to midnight (which is why the wife rarely let's me cook in those situations anymore). Order in? Pizza? I have yet to find chinese other than Bill and Harry that is edible. The late night menu at the brew pub in SO (It's loud and full of drunk rowdy college kids and the food get's worse the later into the evening). We do eat at the diners but I sorta hate them (and end up eating Grilled Cheese at every one of them which gets boring). That's it for us. I can't think of many other places nearby. Anyone else have any late night suggestions? I'm mostly interested in places that stay open late on work nights, but I'd be curious in knowing the late night weekend options too. |

"I'm mostly interested in places that stay open late on work nights, but I'd be curious in knowing the late night weekend options too." I see you don't like diners, but have you tried the Maplewood Diner on Springfield Avenue? It's open all night. We’ve eaten there once a month or so for years. They’re good for those late night meals. It's fast, clean, decent diner food, and is reasonably priced. Good luck...

AlleyGater: Have you tried Hunan Spring for Chinese? They're on Morris Avenue in Springfield... second light after you turn right from Springfield Ave. Kind of a long trip for dinner, I know, but I think they're open until nine. How late are you looking to eat? |

Have you tried using a crockpot (slow cooker)? Prepare the meal in the morning, turn the crockpot on before you leave for work and return to a tasty and nutritious slow cooked meal. When you get home, you can relax a bit and then dish out your dinner and eat. Since it is just the two of you, you might even have leftovers for a second meal. Another possibility is to prepare the week's dinners during the weekend. Freeze in two serving portions and then heat in the oven or the microwave for a few minutes. In the summer, salads and other cold dishes which take little preparation time are a good bet. If you get home early enough to get take-out but too late to eat in most of our local restaurants, you can pick-up take out from a variety of local restaurants -- the selection is far more varied than pizza and Chinese. Use your cell phone to order as you are boarding the train and pick dinner up once you get home. |

Broadway Diner in Summit is open 24 hours. It's not in the central village of Summit -- it's on River Road, not too far from the Short Hills Mall. It's actually one of the best diners around. |

If you're planning to spend the $ on restaurants anyway, how about loading up on those fabulous entrees at Whole Foods? They're pricey but delicious and you can heat and eat a decent meal in a short time. I recommend the chicken pot pie. If you shop on Sunday, I think you can keep their food at least thru Weds. |

If you're interested in eating out during the week, Bunny's serves food until 11 (and midnight on Friday-Saturday nights) or you could take out as well. They have a well-rounded, Italian variety of dishes that are perfect for a quick bite on your way home or when you don't feel like cooking. |

You'd save a ton of money if you cook as much as possible. The Maplewood Diner is decent, but it's still a diner, and it's often impossible to avoid the cigarette smoke, even in the non-smoking section. Otherwise, I'd enjoy eating there more often, to see all the colorful characters coming and going. |

Bunny's and Gaslight have late kitchens, both have very good food. I've very rarely seen drunk rowdy college kids at either place during the week. Actually - the past few times I've been to Gaslight it's had an "older" feel to it - very few college kids, even on a Saturday night. Unfortunately, if you want late evening eat-in, I think it's gonna be a bar or a diner. |
