Lydia - Newark is smoke free? I did not know that.

Kathy - do you recall why this bill didn't pass last time? Here's an article from 2003:

Seemed like the restaurateurs were upset by the casino exemption.

I don't know when a legislative vote was taken. What I can figure out is that on 6-9-2003 the Senate Health, Human Service and Senior Citizens Committee reported a Senate Committee Substitute for the "Clean Indoor Air Act". The substitute exempted casinos. Sen. Adler's present bill is S-264. It is sponsored with Sen. Kean, Jr.

Geez, ever go to a NYC bar and watch them stand outside the bar smoking? Is that what you want to see in the Maplewood village? Have smoking sections and an adequate ventilation system. Why do self righteous do gooders have to ruin it for those with a terrible vice? :-)

im not sure about the NJ bill but the massachusetts version allowed smoking in a bar/restaurante that could provide a seperated smoking section that had not only doors but an isolated ventillation system.

does the NJ bill include no such provision?

I'm with Lumpy. Why can't the decision be left up to the restaurant/bar owner who knows his patrons. I like the fact that we don't have clusters of smokers outside the Gate.

I quit smoking but hope that I am around to pick up the habit again in about 40 years. When I did smoke I used to look down at those non-smokers and know they just didn't undertstand what they were missing. There's nothing better than enjoying a fabulously cold glass of pinot grigio lying under the stars in my backyard and puffing on a Camel Light (or Marlboro Light). I cringe when i see people walkng down the street smoking or standing outside my building smoking, it doesn't bother me a bit seeing someone enjoy a drink and a cigarette at a bar.

Lumpy-
The laws can be similar to the alcohol, NO SMOKING IN PUBLIC like on the sidewalks.

If smoking was banned I'd go to the Gate.

People smoke at the Gate like their next stop is a firing squad.

It doesn't bother me that people cluster outside and smoke, there's a lot of that now outside the Gate.

New Jersey suffers from a "New Joisey" reputation, it wouldn't be a bad thing to take a page from the 2 "coolest" states - New York and California and follow their lead.

Jamie - I don't think Newark is smoke free, it just made it to the list - now I have to find the magazine.

When did smokers become a persecuted group in NJ? Let the business owner decide how they want their business run. If a place is too smokey for you, leave, don't cry about how the smoke bothers you. Go find a place that is more suited to you.

People are going to smoke no matter what, especially at bars. So at 1:30 in the morning instead of having people in the bars you would rather have a bunch of drunk people in the streets? I can't see that causing any problems.

Smoking in bars and restaurants and workplaces is a HEALTH HAZARD. It's not just that non-smokers don't care for it.
I agree, this one is a no-brainer.

We should probably ban all those pesky automobiles, too. Car exhaust ain't exactly health food.

though car exhaust may be bad for your health im sure that smoking is much much worse for not only the smokker but every around them.

as i said before this is an easy choice only because smoking hurts innocent people who do not smoke. if you want to smoke do it away from my and my family, you can feel free to hurt yourself but when my health is an issue then we have an issue.

I don't think St. James Gate is hurting for customers or needs any of the non-smoking patrons that aren't going. I never go there for the simple reason, there is never any room in that place. Again, this a free country. Leave it up to the owners. If you don't like smoke, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Vote with your dollar.

lumpy are you advocating smoking?

About 1 out of every 5 deaths in the US can be attributed to tobacco products.

As an ex-smoker, I really don't care what they do. One thing about going to a smoky bar, it makes me approeciate that I don't smoke anymore.

Alg,
Let's meet in 40 years in your backyard for a glass and a cig! Cheers! :-)

It's good to know that smoking is not bad for me as long as I do it in a casino.

Jamie: I am advocating freedom to smoke if you want and freedom to choose not to go to an estabishment that allows it. No one is making you go to St. James Gate.

I could go to NYC - but would rather stay local.

Check this out: Cigarette smoke contains 69 chemical compounds that are known cause cancer.

With this fact alone why would anyone permit this.

Bars want smoking - smoking goes with drinking - smokers are addicts.

Over 50,000 people a year die from secondhand smoke in the US alone.

Lumpyhead - please give us some clear cut reasons as to why we should endorse smoking.

We shouldn't endorse smoking, but we need to pass laws that are fair. Right now states profit tremendously from smoking, while at the same time preaching its ills. You can't have it both ways.

There should be a federal ban on smoking. Regional bans and specialized taxes are unfair.

I am not endorsing smoking the same way I don't endorse abortion but I believe in choice. Not smoking in a public library, school or place of business is a good thing. Smoking should be allowed in a well ventilated bar and have a specific section to accomodate others that don't. I am tired of all the banning going on around here.

lumpy - are you a smoker?

All I need is one reason why smoking should be allowed in any indoor public place. Just one redeeming value.

This is one reason why I oppose it: Cigarettes will eventually kill a third of the people who use them.
