Can anyone recommend a Portuguese restaurant in Newark that has more than steamed vegetables or vegetarian paella for non-meat eaters? Thanks!

Unfortunately, no.

Fernandes has a very nice salad bar with grilled vegetables and fresh salads which a vegetarian could certainly fill up on and enjoy, but pretty much everything I've eaten (other than that) has seafood in it.

My husband and I got a combo dish from Iberia that had a delicious pasta dish in it, but that may not be a sufficient meal either.

There might be some appetizers that could be combined to make a nice meal, but 'm drawing a blank now—maybe stuffed mushrooms? Some places might accomodate a vegetarian, but I'd certainly call before going. I have a tough time and I do eat fish, they just seem to throw some type of meat in everything.

Thenewguy: Why does it have to be Portuguese? They're known for fish and meat. I couldn't even begin to imagine what a vegetarian Portuguese dish would look like, if not veggies or salads. Of couse there is plenty of rice and beans to be had, but the signature soup in these places is Caldo Gallego which I think is made from chicken stock and has some chorizo in it along with the beans, potatoes etc.

I'm vegetarian, but I eat fish and dairy and eggs, and gelatin. The definition of vegetarian can mean OH SO MUCH. If the vegetarian that you are trying to cater to eats fish as I do, then your fine at the Portugese place. Otherwise I think as already suggested, your going to have rice, beans, boring steamed veggies, and bread. Trust me, I've had worse than that.

It certainly couldn't hurt to ask if they have Pao de Queso (cheese rolls, but it's a Brazillian appetizer). Also see if the chef can make a Super Veggie Paella. It can't imagine that would be difficult. With a side of beans. Yummm.

Bottom line is you need to do some more research on what kind of vegetarian we are dealing with here. Everyone is assuming you mean a vegan (strictly no animal products) but that might not be the case.

Even rice and beans is often prepared with either sausage, bacon or pork. And I'm guessing (though I let it slide under my radar) that the rice is made with chicken stock.
Bottom line, if the person does not eat seafood, a Portuguese place is not the place to go.

I read that thread title and immediately thought..
mutually exclusive. Having a Portugese sister in law there are not many things that do not, as SHH mentions have sausage, bacon, pork, or other meats as the base. But I am sure somewhere someone will prove this wrong and open a vegetarian portugese restaurant.

Forno's, which is Spanish, not Portuguese, used to make nice fritatas, if you eat eggs.

My wife is a vegetarian (not vegan, no fish) and occasionally me and my friends need to satisfy our Iberian cravings. So am just looking for a place without having to leave her completely in the lurch (recognizing the limited options to begin with). Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Newguy, if she's flexible, perhaps she'd enjoy the salad bar at Fernandes. That and a few sangrias, ya' never know...
