No, I am not. I just hang around with lots of them and I am tired of sitting by my lonesome healthy self. St. James Gate is a business, why can't you leave it up to them? If you don't like smoke, DON'T GO THERE. Why is this so difficult to comprehend? |

Ok, where should i go locally? I LOVE the pub - I want to go to the pub - I live steps away from it. And I do go, but I hate the smoke! Your solution is "don't go there" - the health of the people that live here is a non-issue? Why can't you comprehend that smoking is a wrong thing to have in a public place? |

Jamie, John Mead and most of his family all smoke. They'll probably be the last ones to adopt any non-smoking laws. Have you asked him about better ventilation? |

I agree that smoking should be banned in public places, but the gate is a private establishment. |

I don't think most of the Meades smoke. And I'm pretty sure John doesn't like smoke in general - he'd be all for a statewide ban. |

This is about Jamie wanting to go to a smoke free pub that he lives near forgetting the fact that it is a private establishment. Personally I could care less what St. James does. I don't smoke and I don't go there, he does. We should also have them ban the Fish and Chips due to the high cholesterol content. We are all paying for health care. |

When they do ban smoking at the pub we can have a poster of Jamie on window so the smokers outside know who to thank! |

Don't forget to ban the use of perfume and cologne while you're at it. Many people have sensitivity to fragrances. And in the interests of making everyone healthier by making sure that no one does anything that could possibly endanger the health of another patron, let's make a law that punishes those who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom. Not just employees--everyone. And let's put a person in the bathroom to check. That way we can put more people to work while we combat communicable diseases. And let's ban chewing gum. I hate it when people chew with their mouths open or crack their gum. And let's ban Cowboy fans, too. Because they tend to raise my blood pressure--and that's not healthy. |

thoughtful, I don't think the slippery slope argument is useful here. We do have to draw the line somewhere. I'm not sure if I favor banning smoking in restaurants, but there are pollutants we should protect the public from in private establishments that are open to the public. Just because we can't protect from all of them doesn't mean we shouldn't ban one or more. Some are worse than others. |

Jaime, There is not one, not one death that has been causally tied to second hand smoke. "thetruth" is almost all lies. Not one. I don't smoke, and smoke bothers me, and I'd rather patronize smoke free places, but I do understand the real medical risks for secondhand smoke, and there really aren't any. That is there really aren't any unless you are exposed to thick second hand smoke 24/7, and when I say thick I mean thicker than smoking a ciggarette yourself.

I'd prefer smokeless places, but don't have a strong opinion about it. I wonder if those living above the pub would be affected by outdoor smokers in the summer. |

Tom, Yes, there are pollutants all around us. Smoking is public enemy number one, though, largely because it's such an obvious act. But that doesn't necssarily mean that it's the most hazardous activity around. Why are we picking on the smokers so much?

Because smoking involves others in the activity. |

That's because smokers are so friendly, I guess, that they involve others. Why protect the non smokers from the smokers? A person lives in New Jersey, eats fried food, doesn't exercise, and drinks to excess, but we have to protect them from cigarette smoke? Free the smokers! Maybe it should be like adult swim: once an hour, every non-smoker has to leave the bar.

cmontyburns, Why shouldn't smoking be illegal? I can't walk down the street and punch someone, but I can walk down the street and blow smoke in someone's general direction. It's disgusting. Furthermore, if we can't drink on the street, or smoke other substances on the street, why is smoking tobacco still tolerated? If someone wants to smoke cigarettes, let them do it on their own property. |
