WASHINGTON - An old friend of President Bush (news - web sites) who secretly recorded their private conversations and released them to the media said he has regrets and is turning the tapes over to Bush. Doug Wead allowed journalists to hear and broadcast the tapes in the past week as he promoted his new book on presidential parents. But he said he canceled plans to be on "Hardball" on MSNBC Tuesday night to talk about his regrets because "it would only add to the distraction I have caused to the president's important and historic work." "Contrary to a statement that I made to the New York Times, I have come to realize that personal relationships are more important than history," Wead wrote in a letter to the show's host, Chris Matthews, that MSNBC released to the public on Wednesday. "I am asking my attorney to direct any future proceeds from the book to charity and to find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong. History can wait." How did he think it would all work out? What a dummy. |

Is his name "Wead" or "weed," representing the more hidden, former, extracurricular activities of our illustrious chief executive? |

What was it do you think that Bush threatened him with, exactly? Financial destruction? Complete defamation of character? First chosen for upcoming draft? |

Probably threatened him with a weekend of clearing brush on the hacienda in Crawford, TX. Having to spend a weekend pretending to be a rancher/farmer/outdoorsman with el presidente would probably turn off even the most ardent supporter of this administration. |

I have little sympathy for George Bush, but no one should have to deal with this kind of personal betrayal, which appears to be motivated simply by greed and a desire for publicity.

In a strange way the tapes make me respect George more. I have often wondered how much of what he does is driven by Karl Rove or crass politics of the moment, and how much comes from George's own deeply held beliefs. The tapes make it clear that he has thought about this stuff in sharp ways in the past, that he had a strategic vision, and that his beliefs are long-held. I may disagree with these beliefs and his strategies, but I somehow feel a little better that he is less a stooge or puppet. The revealing of presidential papers and tapes is critical to understanding history, although it usually happens long after the pres is history himself. I hope the Bushidos do not destroy these tapes once Wead turns them over. |

We heard about 10 percent of the tapes, chosen specifically by the author friendly to Bush. Can you imagine what we didn't hear? There was a reason Bush muscled this guy Wead, and it's safe to say it was about more than weed. These tapes will be destoyed faster than Colin Powell's credibility.

Ah, yes, where's Tricky Dick Nixon's admin assistant (Rosemary Woods, I believe, and I think she died recently) now that the administration needs her to erase accidentally a few chosen minutes of tape. What comes around will eventually go around, I believe. |

What comes around will eventually go around, I believe. Thread drift perhaps, but, we read in local papers here on the "state line" that Santorum is being greeted with "boos" every time he appears on college campuses. So much for the afterglow/apron strings of homeland security. Just not that sexy anymore, I guess, eh? |

Imagine the kind of pressure/threats Mr. Wead has recieved since revealing these tapes. Powerful families don't like it when dirty secrets are aired. It's not surprising that he pulled them back. Or maybe it's the other way around. Maybe he used them to pressure the Bush family to get his own piece of the pie. Hmmmm |
