I visited the dollar store yesterday. While not an inflated 5 & 10 of yesteryear, it was packed with a variety of stuff - the amount of food surprised me - even has a frozen food section . I went to check out papayagirl's Sharpies find, hoping to get a similar bargain. However, when I read the back of the package it looked as though the English was translated from Chinese! It's made in China. Do you think the stuff might be illegal copies? Will they begin to sell Gucci purses? Is it legal? |

Mtierney: do you have any idea how much of American consumer goods are made in China? It doesn't have to mean anything illegal. It's just the global economy. Ask the bigwigs at Wal-Mart. I think some of the stuff that has labels in Chinese is just some of the product that was initially manufactured for home use there but then sold on the international market instead. I've gotten major brand toothpaste, etc with Chinese labeling at dollar stores. While in China I was able to get my name-brand tampons there as well. (Now there's an odd souvenir from traveling - a box of O.B.s with information written in Chinese!) Nothing sinister about it.

That's called the gray market, when a product is intended for shipment to one country but ends up here in the USA. The non-English label gives it away. Most often it happens with electronics. And it is illegal. |

I wonder why it is illegal given that it's the same product. Or is it like importing medicine from Canada? Seems like the corporations really have our politicians in thrall if they can advise them to devise laws that make it illegal for Americans to buy the exact same goods at a cheaper price. I guess the free market isn't really all that free. At least not if it cuts into corporate/shareholder profits. If we want to know why the cost of medical care keeps rising so sharply I guess we should look into this a little more closely and stop pretending that doctors and hospitals are so greedy. Sorry for the rant, but really, this stuff disgusts me. Cathy

Maybe because it went under the tariff and regulations radar. Even if something is not tariffed, the labeling etc., should comply with local law. I notice that ingredients lists are written differently in the UK than here. Maybe we call it grey market because it's illegal but not awfully immoral. |

Grey market goods are rarely illegal. An exception -- grey market cars, for instance, are illegal to have if not recertified for US safety/emissions. Grey market items are not "knock offs" or "copies" -- but intended for distribution in other regions of the world. (even in other parts of the country, e.g., in the case of some appliance manufacturers!) Its a practice that manufacturers hate, however, because they lose control of their product, and they will not usually honor warranties. Arn't dollar stores great! /p

Gray market goods are common in the photography field and with watches. These are relatively high ticket items and the manufacturers warrenty isn't good in the US. Usually the importer offers a warrenty that is only as good as the importer. I don't think anyone is worried about a warrenty on a Sharpie, but here in Maplewood who knows? |

I went in yesterday and found several useful items. (The Sharpies are still there - the "bold point" variety.) I liked the Tabatchnik's items (bought a salmon soup, of all things). The specialty sweet breads in the freezer were a really nice surprise! Yes, the store was neat and clean (I'd be shocked and repulsed by any business that started out in any other fashion.) I hope it stays that way as many dollar stores don't, somehow. Welcome to Maplewood, Saad Jilani. Suggestion: check out the Dollar Tree on Stuyvesant in Union in terms of stock. They have an amazing variety (as do all their locations, even the smaller ones) including an emphasis on useful items instead of lots of filler junk like so many dollar stores do. Cathy |

Oh my gosh, I just got back from there and I am THRILLED!! The owner was the nicest guy, the store was spotless, they have MILK!! They have a million things that over the years I wanted from Rite Aid and never found AND my boys got huge packs of Yu Gi Oh cards (fake, but they don't seem to care) for $1!!! This is exactly what we needed and I couldn't be happier. In fact, I went in there in a really bad mood and left feeling fantastic. If a dollar store can do that, who needs Prozac? |

I've had the Tabatchnik's frozen pea soup...I'm never making my own again. 4 and a half minutes and you've got home made soup. I can't wait to try the chicken and the navy bean. Also a great place for those pesky items you always need more of...coaxial cable, telephone cords, extension cords, tape, etc., etc. |

I went to 99cent Globe for the first time last Thursday and had a wonderful experence, just like everyone said. I was looking for safty pins and walked right past them...twice, and went back to the counter and told one of the employees I couldn't find them and he was a great help, I found them. I went back on Saturday and got more safty pin and got other things as well and I am planning on taking my art teacher to the store.
