I was hoping to connect with parents who are sending their child(ren) to St. Stephen's in Millburn. We currently live in Maplewood but
would have to balance the drop off and pick up schedule with the mid-town direct train to Manhattan.

We're considering them for my 2 year old daughter. She's currently going to the Y and we haven't been impressed with them.

My daughter started at St. Stephens three years ago when she had just turned two. She has been very happy and well-cared for the entire time. She is now in the kindergarten program and is beginning to read and write and do a little bit of math, even though she has just turned five. Classes are small and the student population is very diverse.

My older kids attended both the Y and Prospect Co-op, and I definitely like St. Stephens the best. (Prospect is a great school, but the hours were way too short and I didn't like the co-op aspect of the school very much.)

I haven't been very involved in the parent community at St. Stephens, because my focus has been on my older kids' school, but I know that there is a very active and involved parent group, which is important to many parents, especially when they are new to a community. You might consider asking Sheelagh Clark, who is the director, to put you in touch with the parent reps.

Overall I like the school. Its safe, caring environment.

Its a shame there aren't many/any good non lottery pre-schools in maplewood.....a great business opportunity for anyone with the time and inclination....

I think that the reason there aren't "many/any good non-lottery preschools in maplewood" (if that is true) is just that there aren't enough preschool spaces. I'm not sure that there are many appropriate facilities in town going unused either, though, so I'm not sure it would be that easy to open one up. Most, if not all, of the preschools in town are non-profits and depend upon the sponsorship of other nonprofits (churches, synagogues, etc.) including free or low-priced rent, etc. in order to even exist. So, I'm not sure that it is really such a "great business opportunity."

Another vote of confidence for St Stephen's. Our 3 (soon to be 4) year old is in his second year there. Great people and a nurturing environment.
