I didn't expect much but I was pleasantly surprised. He was much better than Steve Martin and on par with Whoopie Goldberg. My favorite is still Billy Crystal but I thought Chris Rock added a really nice flavor to the often staid Oscars., |

I thought Chris was pretty good and suprisingly well received even before he started his monolouge....all my predictions came true as far as the awards go so it was great to see someone new hosting! |

Not only was she terrible, but the songs she sang were terrible - I don't think anyone could have redeemed them. What was the deal with her eyeshadow? It got worse with every song - from pistachio green to sparkly black almost to her eyebrows. It was so distracting that I sometimes could ignore the horrible songs. I'm glad that the song Antonio Banderas sang was the winner - at least he and Carlos Santana gave a genuine performance. |

I just didn't think that Chris Rock was that good. His whole shtick was making fun of movie stars. It was the same thing that Letterman did, making fun of is audience and it was a bomb. People at home were probably laughing but there wasn't much laughter in the audience. It would have been funnier in his stand up act but it was sort of uncomfortable watching people do that polite laughter thing or not laughing at all which was most of the time. I didn't even like Antonio Banderas' song. I think that's why the winner got up and sung a few lines so people would know how it was suppose to sound... |

Chris Rock's monologue was the best part of the show. Anyone else notice all the empty seats? Were those reserved for Jude Law & friends? |

Yes, I noticed the empty seats, but they were up in the balconies, weren't they? Not Jude Law territory. Neither Renee Zellwegger nor Drew Barrymore looked particularly good as brunettes. If it's for a role, fine, but it's a mistake if it's just a new look. I liked the guy who won the humanitarian award - he spoke well, and it was lovely to see him acknowledge his wife of 52 years and all his children and grandchildren. |

What was the deal with Jude Law? I missed that part. All I saw was when Sean Penn said Jude Law was one of the finest actors...(before he announced the Best Actress winner.) |

quote:There's only four real stars. The rest are just popular people. ... You want Tom Cruise and all you can get is Jude Law? Wait. It's not the same thing. Who is Jude Law? Why is he in every movie I have seen the last four years? Even the movies he's not acting in, if you look at the credits, he made cupcakes or something. He's gay, he's straight, he's American, he's British. Next year he's playing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar."

Ok it just shows that Sean Penn takes himself waaaayy too seriously - no sense of humor. I thought Chris Rock was great - as far as the Oscars go. I loved the part where he interviewed people at the movie theatre. And sorry Jem but I think Antonio B was terrible. I muted the tv. |

While I think he was too much on the African-American Inside Joke Bandwagon, I thought the montage at the Magic Johnson Movie Theater was hysterical. I'll bet he's quietly not invited back. I love Chris Rock and detest Billy Crystal, but Crystal is the right host for the Oscars.

I may be in the minority but I thought Billy Crystal was such a snoozer. I can see how people may not have liked Chris Rock but I thought he was at least different. Also kudos for not ending at 1:00. I think this may have been the shortest Oscars ever. |

Chris Rock's monologue was the best part of the show. DITTO! I have it on tape. I thought he did a pretty decent job and enjoyed him. I didn't think Beyonce did a bad job. The one who did was Antonio B. who "over sang" the song. Carlos Santana was GREAT! I wish he just did a solo of the song alone on his guitar. Poor Sean can't take a joke. He does need to "loosen up". Chris replied to Sean saying, "my accountants would like to see you back stage." (Meaning the HUGE dudes with the shades holding the briefcases standing behind Rock.) Looked like they could do a little "ruff housing" on Sean |

Is it me? I just can't stand singers who sing with the mike at their lips? It looks as though they were ready to take a bite! I often can't follow the lyrics without some help. The music does its best to drown out the singers. Surely the sound systems today are such that the mike is more crutch than a necessity. If singers can't give up their pacifiers, then hold it below the chin! The eyeshadow was way over the top - when it's the only thing you can see, it's too much! I think Chris Rock looked a little constipated - he was trying so hard to speak in words bigger than four letters. Frankly, I thought his unfunny interviews at the movie theatre made the people look pretty dumb. Also, what makes the AA event a time for cheap shots at the administration? How the academy and everyone in that auditorium could not feel embarrassment over their ignoring The Passion, with its incredible musical score, acting and photography. They are film people, right? They are actors, right? They are big time bottom line feeders, right? It is a disgrace IMHO. But, hey, Mel Gibson is laughing all the way to the bank! |

Heard on CNN that the ratings for the oscars were the highest in the past five years. If that's the case, Chris Rock will be back! I thought he was fairly tame, but funny. Billy Crystal always made fun of the movie stars, but maybe got away with it. Why did Beyonce sing three songs? Never mind that I can't stand her, but three songs? No one else available? |

Yikes! We get kinda heated about something so ephermeral--an awards show, for goodness sake---it'll be forgotten in about, oh, say another twenty minutes or so. But I admit to being fascinated by the range of responses to C-Rock. I get that he was trying hard to bite the hand, etc., and the obscenities were brimming just below the surface...yet I think it was a credible performance. The whole concept of celebrity worship has been tarnished in recent years (maybe we're maturing???) and it's probably healthy for Chris Rock to give it a bit of a swift kick. |

Ratings were actually down from last year, so who knows if CR will be back. He was pretty unfunny in my book. I miss those Billy Crystal opening song and dance routines ("Jack, Jack! Why did you do Mars Attacks?") and the film montages that he had himself inserted into. Now that was funny. Say what you want about Beyonce, but that girl can sing! |

Chris Rock uncomfotable and out of his element. His "bon mots" attempts were bombs. Yes too much Beyonce. a medium talent; fairly flexible voice and good intonation but weak and emotionless. Ho hum. |

What did I like? Well, Clint Eastwood's acknowledging the presence of his 96 year old mother was touching. The man who received the humanitarian award gave the most cogent, well-delivered acceptance speech of the night. Oh, that film some of you love to hate? It grossed over $604 million worldwide as of January and it is being re-released this month. |

Guess you missed the part with the interviews at the movie theater. Awful and offensive movies sure make lots of money. Hope you are going out to see Diary of a Mad Black Woman since it is #1 this week. If so many people are going to see it, it must have "incredible musical score, acting and photography!". |

Heard on CNN that the ratings for the oscars were the highest in the past five years. If that's the case, Chris Rock will be back! The Oscars drew in 40 million viewers! ROCK may be BACK! Awful and offensive movies sure make lots of money. Hope you are going out to see Diary of a Mad Black Woman since it is #1 this week. If so many people are going to see it, it must have "incredible musical score, acting and photography!". wendyn, Please don't compare these movies AA viewers at the Magic Johnson Theater referred to as a "favorite" movie, to "Diary of a Mad Black Woman". The title may be deceiving to folks who don't follow Tyler Perry's plays. This was actual a Gospel play written in 2001 by Tyler Perry brought to screen. His plays according to Perry, “always deliver a righteous message of redemption, forgiveness and salvation in an elixir of drama and comedy”. There's always a "message" to his gospel plays. I haven’t seen the movie (and don’t know if it lives-up to the play), but the turn-out was basically based on the popularity of the original that was featured in NYC at the Beacon Theater and numerous venues around the country.. |

Actually ratings were down 5% from last year. Finals ratings will be available Tuesday night. http://money.cnn.com/2005/02/28/news/fortune500/oscar_ratings/index.htm Chris Rock used to be hilarious. It has been downhill since he made HEAD of STATE. |

I did like Chris Rock, he did spice up the show immensely. However I agree that he may have seemed out of his element at times like why did he have to give a shout out to Brooklyn at the end of the show? That was just out of place and unnecessary, however mildly amusing. |

Forget all the blather about Chris Rock. Can anybody explain the glaring oversight of Ronald Reagan at the AA ceremonies? What force or cunning left any tribute to Ronald Reagan out? Other than a reference to his death in the memorial segment, there was no special acknowledgement of his contribution to the movie industry. RR acted in some 50+ movies. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild for many years. He was governor of California. He was a two-term president of the United States. No matter your political persuasion, RR brought dignity to the word "actor" - a characteristic sorely lacking among the current crop in Hollywood - IMHO. I was a fan of Johnny Carson and I thought his tribute appropriate altho he certainly was not a movie star himself. Was he in any movies? } |
