We've never taken the Northern route - one of our group is interested in Sligo. Just wondered if anyone has "must see" or "must stay here" advice in that area (or any in between).

I am a Yeats fan, so loved Thoor Ballylee, near Gort, his medieval tower home. He is buried in Drumcliff Churchyard, 'under bare Ben Bulben's head.' The coastal drive from Sligo north to Donegal is supposed to be beautiful, but I can't vouch for that since it was dreadfully foggy when I was there!

Sligo is my hometown! When are you going there and how much time will you have? What are you interested in seeing?

wow... this is great! We are 5 travelers and will arrive at Shannon around 10 a.m. on May 21st - flying out of Dublin late afternoon of the 29th. We're still working on the Itinerary,... not looking for things that are too "touresty", but Yeats country is a big draw. So is Ennis - we're looking for good music and their festival begins the 23rd. A stop at the "family land" in Castlerea is also a must. The Aran Islands look interesting. We have more experience in the South so other possibilities are the Dingle Peninsula, the park behind Blarney Castle (no need to kiss the stone), Waterford and St. Kevin's in the Wicklow Mtns. if time allows. We're open to suggestions, however - as long as we end up with the last night in Dublin. We have vouchers for B&Bs, and would welcome recommendations for things to see or do and stay and eat. Thank you!

I've been to Ireland several times, mostly in the West. I go to Ireland when I need to seriously unwind. Because of this my preference is to go to an area with things nearby that interest me and make one B&B my home base for several days. During the course of my stay, I'll take the map out and figure out where I want to drive to next. In the West I've stayed in Dingle, Galway, Doolin, Cahir and a few other locations.

I've never really been north of Clifden or Tuam so I can't recommend anything but would love to know what you think of that area once you've been there. I'm so envious...I'm in desperate need of some serious relaxation...

If you are traveling by Ennis then go out towards Cliffs of Moher and stop at MONKS restaurant for the best seafood around and a good pint of Guinness also. Pol na Brona is also that way - this is a Dolman (acient burial place) one of theoldest in Europe.

You could drive around Lough Derg and stop at Mount Shannon - a lovely little Village about 45 mins outside Shannon (Irish style driving LOL) - great coffee shop/lunch time food and Noel's restaurant for evening meal.
Yates country is a must - look for the Autograph Tree
Spideal and Clifton good - tourist place. Go to Ashford Castle and see where the Quiet Man was made. Drive out around Lough Corrib & Lough Mass and go to Lennan - stay at the old hotel there the food is unbelievable - believe me. Then pay a visit to Kylmore Abbey. On up to Mayo and into Sligo - you can’t go wrong. Max will fill you in here.

If you need info on where to go in Dublin email me…. I went to school and worked there before moving to US of A!
