Planning a Summer Vacation to the South of France & was wondering if anyone had any opinions on where to stay. We are already thinking of Nice (for a city), Arles (for a "town") and we are debating about a good beach destination in between. St. Tropez seems a bit too pretentious, so we were thinking of either Ste. Maxime or Corsica.

Any opinions or alternatives?

Thanks!

Try Montpellier, somewhat farther west---wonderful architecture and not as touristy as Nice. Visit the town of Aigues Mortes--- used to be closer to the sea but now landlocked and quite interesting to see.

I also recommend Carcassonne and Perpignan, for great architecture. If you're going to Arles, you may as well spend some time in Nimes, which I find friendlier.

Corsica is worthy of a trip on its own, and, as I recollect, is about an hour's flight from airport at Nice or Marseilles. Corsica is stunningly wild and culturally very different from the French mainland.
