I subscribe to Optimum Online and started to notice something funny when I went to try and find an email - it had disappeared!?!?! I checked to see if I had exceeded my limit - which is a pathetic 20MB and I wasn't even close. Then I noticed that prior to a certain date all of my messages had vanished!

I contacted them about it and after a couple of unhelpful emails back and forth, they finally said, "Oh, by the way, messages greater than 90 days old are automatically deleted from our server." What genious thought up that scheme? And 90 days is absolutely ridiculous! Hello! I pay for the service!

So be forewarned - if you have messages in your Inbox that you want to save from the Optimum Online thieves I think you can create a folder to save them from automatic deletion.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a different cable-internet provider? Considering that yahoo and hotmail give you 250MB for nothing (and don't raid your Inbox after 90 days), I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm not getting much for my $$.

If you dislike their email service (which I did, too) but like everything else (which I also did), I suggest you keep their internet service and just ignore their email. Use hotmail or Yahoo or google for email. Google gives you 1000 MB for free. If you'd like to try it, I'll send you an invitation. You still need one to sign up.

There is no other cable modem service provider in South Orange. You can get DSL from Verizon and perhaps other companies.

I agree with Tom. The paltry 20 meg can be eaten up by 2 or 3 pictures. I also keep a yahoo mail address. Optonline's email capability is almost embarrassingly primitive.

Tom - I would like the invite for a Google email account, you can send it to daves745t at optonline dot net
I actually do have other email accounts. But I guess the thing that gets stuck in my throat is the fact that even though I am below my limit, Optonline still automatically deletes messages greater than 90 days old. That is absolutely ludicrous - 90 days is just not that long and again it is part of the service I'm paying for.

In fact you get up to five accounts with a 20MB limit. I inquired about combining the accounts to increase the storage capacity. I explained that I don't need five accounts and since I'm alotted a total of 100MB I should use it as I see fit. That inquiry has been met with silence. Needless to say there are no Nobel Laureates at Optimum Online.

There are at least two ways to look at it.

One is that you are not getting what you pay for.

Another is that you are paying a reasonable amount and have what you need, despite optonline's incompetence. You are not getting it from them, even though you are paying them, but you are getting it. This doesn't excuse them one bit, but it's one reason for considering leaving things as they are, since your other alternatives are probably not as good.

You should have received your invitation by now.

I have 49 left, and the level seems to go back up to 50 quickly, which means I seem to have an infinite number of invitations to give out, so I will give them to all people who request them. I have a feeling gmail is just about ready to open the floodgates soon.
