I'm thinking about going to Camelback Mountain on Saturday. Anyone know if it gets mobbed on weekends? Any better places for a novice skiier?

For a novice skier, I recommend Mt. Peter, it's in Warwick, NY. It's lowkey, there are many trails for a novice, and I remember it being a bit cheaper than many of the surrounding mountains. We might actually head up there this weekend!

Have fun!

Camelback gets very crowded on the weekends--but so do any of the Pocono-area ski mountains. Jack Frost Mountain is a little farther West, but offers very good skiing for beginners. Any where you go, though, I would plan on getting there right at opening. It will be less crowded in the morning, and you will have opportunity to get a few good runs in before it begins to get crowded. If you need to get very young kids into programs, then you will need to be there a couple of hours before opening to get them registered. Check the ski areas website--most give pretty good info. JFBB.com will get you information on Jack Frost, and its sister mountain, Big Boulder. The nice part about this is you can ski both areas on one lift ticket, Jack Frost doesn't have night skiing, but Big Boulder does, and your lift ticket at one is good at the other! Happy shooshing--the conditions are great!

As exwoodgirl says, the earlier the better. Buses arrive around 10, so by 11:00 it's starting to crowd up.

Here are my observations:
1. Although the lift lines might be crowded, they move pretty fast and surprisingly, most of the trails aren't crowded.

2. Camelback has a terrain park and a halfpipe, so while those are generally crowded, they siphon a few hundred boarder kids off the regular slopes.

3. There are a couple of double chair lifts tucked away to the right of the beginner hill - "Sunbowl". Look at the signage for The Cleopatra lift or the Marc Antony lift. There is generally no wait at either of those two, and each will take you to runs of all ability levels.

4. The "left side" of the mountain is slightly less crowded than the right side. By left, I mean the slopes over by the Glen Lodge.

5. Sundays seem to be less crowded than Saturdays.
Fewer buses, maybe.

6. The weekend after a big snow is always more crowded, but as the season wears on, this doesn't always hold. Maybe it's because the ski clubs book earlier in the season and feel that booking in March is iffy?
