Debby, in most cases I think you're right about sharing defense points, but here the obvious end result of this going to trial is the end of the Internet as we know it. No one would ever again host an online forum if they could be sued for something a third party copied and pasted from an official Board of Education web site that the message board owners never even read and were never requested to remove. I'm doing a lot of case work background research myself. Zeran v. America On-Line, Inc. is an important case, as is the recent decision on Emerson's web site. Then there's federal law, like the Communications Decency Act (sec. 230), which is fairly clear about these issues. By doing a lot of the legwork myself, I hope we can save the majority of donated funds to split between Maplewood & South Orange Rescue Squads and other deserving parties. We're also waiting on word from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Public Citizen about legal assistance. If anyone is a member of one of these organizations or has other contacts, any lobbying is much appreciated. I'm working other online communities for support, as well. MOL and the Internet will remain free, but we often have to fight for things. And hiding the fight won't help. We have to send a message to those who would remove our freedoms that they have a losing battle on their hands. |

The question is, will I? Spoke to Lil Miss LL who graduated with the 2 ex-students. She can't believe this isn't all done and over with after 2 years. She initally was on their side, feeling that they were not treated fairly by the administration (to wish I politely disagreed)> But after this stunt she said she's lost all respect for them and now thinks that perhaps the district wasn't so harsh. |

I don't know any of the parties involved, nor anyone at the school during the event. But, LL reminds me of something. The plaintiffs are now, what, 20 y/o? I've seen other situations where a civil incident, with three legitimate sides to the story (one side, the other side and the truth in the middle) was inflamed because a lawyer decided they could make a name for themselves, get some publicity, fight injustice and make some money. I'm more inclined to lose respect for full grown adults who pursue frivolous lawsuits for personal gains. These kids are still immature and impressionable. |

Were these 2 monors when this happened? If they were that COULD be what the 'problem' is. As for the lawyer, sounds like she has an agenda. Her husband Dennis sued the school system himself a few years ago. |

I did pro-bono work for SOMEA in 1990. That must mean nothing. If it did, some lobbying would be happening at this moment to get MOL tossed off the suit. If any teachers are reading this, do the right thing and call Mr. Dennis. When teachers needed someone to step-up, I did. I now need them to return the favor. |

"Suing MOL is like suing the letter carrier who delivered Mr. H's letter home to the parents." It's worse. It's like suing the store where you bought the mail box into which the letter was deposited!

How do you inadvertently strike a security guard? This lawsuit is bull. Just another waste of our taxpayer dollars. The kids graduated and are now attending college. Can they really claim they have been harmed? Also another example of a situation being poorly handled by Super H. How does this guy keep his job? |

The lawsuit has been filed not only against specific people but a few dozen "John Does." How does this lawsuit intend to collect claims against these persons? |

Moreover, shouldn't residents named John Doe sue the plaintiffs and their attorney for defamation? |

I once bit my tongue inadvertently while eating steak. I didn't sue anyone, let alone the beef industry, which has big bucks. I even fell through a trap-door in Sbenois' house once and didn't sue. dang, I better shut up and stop giving the prosecution ideas! |

Tell it to the judge. Furthermore, you didn't make me sign a waiver upon my entrance indicating you had varying levels. |

I'm curious about something. In the original letter posted on the BOE website about the 'incident' in the CHS Cafe I don't recall the names of the students involved being mentioned. Were they? And if they weren't, what are the grounds for this insane lawsuit? Were names mentioned on the CHS PA system? Anyone know first hand? |

Someone suggested that we should demonstrate in front of these people's houses. I think that's a great idea and would be glad to participate. Maybe if we do, some people will develop a little common sense. But just a little |
