Got Books?

Please support literacy in our schools through the 3rd annual Reading = Success Book Drive. New and gently used books collected at two dozen locations throughout Maplewood and South Orange during the month of March will find their way to our district elementary classrooms through a no-cost “reverse book fair” at which teachers can select books to bolster classroom libraries, encourage book exchanges and to be given as incentives for summer reading.

Over 12,500 books have been added to classroom collections in the first two years of this program.

From March 1 - 31, specially marked collection boxes can be found in the district’s schools and in businesses around Maplewood and South Orange to collect new and gently used books appropriate for K – 5 students. No books will be sold. Books may be brought to any of the elementary and middle schools, South Orange Library, Maplewood Memorial Library, Maplewood Library – Hilton Branch, Allegiance and Norcrown Banks in South Orange, Bank of America and Wachovia Banks in Maplewood, Mail Boxes, Etc., Net Nomads, Goldfinch Books, Pen & Jen’s in the Maplewood Train Station, the dental office of Dr. Deborah Rosenberg on Millburn Ave, and the Family Chiropractic Office on Prospect Street, Prospect Presbyterian Church, St. George’s Episcopal Church and St. Andrews and Holy Communion Church. Students in several Columbia High School clubs will collect books, as will the Girl Scouts in Troop 230.

If you'd like more information about this project, please PL me. We're especially looking for people with connections to publishing houses. Last year, we were able to bring in over 3000 brand new books through these community connections.

Thanks,

Barbara

The Reading=Success Community Book Drive is entering its final week. Ed Seabridge from Suncrest Farms has been picking up books from his customers -- have your brought your new or gently used K-5 books to a collection site yet?

Over two dozen volunteers worked diligently today to set up the book fair for our teachers - to be held Wed and Thurs afternoons, but there is still more to be done. A few extra hands will allow us to finish the set up tonight.

As you might know, this free bookfair puts books into our districts classrooms, and directly in to the hands of children who might not have home book collections. New books from Scholastic and Harper Collins supplement the new and gently used books donated by community members. The assortment is rather astonishing!

If you find yourself free tonight between 7 - 9 and can lend a hand at the Woman's Club in Maplewood, please do come by.

Thanks,

Barbara
