Went to see the Drawer Boy at Papermill last night. Well, I was floored. I had no idea that the play would be as mesmerizing as it was. I rarely see something that I have no idea about. I usually know something about the plot and the actors. This was cold. The acting was incredible especially Paul Vincent O'Connor as Angus. What a moving performance in an incredibly difficult role. The scenery was brilliant, truly capturing the feel of the farm. Even little details effected me. Neil Young's music was perfect to open and close the play. I know we have terrific opportunities in SO/Map to see good theater but this was truly Broadway quality. And we were home in ten minutes. (BTW< I do not work at the Papermill, am not related to anyone who works there, don't know any of the actors, etc. It was just a wonderful experience!) |

Great good news Nancy. I think things are on the upswing over there and am glad to hear they did right by the play. When I saw it (not at Papermill) I had one of those da*n I am too old for that part regrets, but completely enjoyed the play. Mr. Gennaro has a great theatrical pedigree and I think will continue to elevate and educate his audience beyond what previous Artistic Director's have done there, though I think he doesn't call himself that. Also, John Mahoney (from Frasier) is in this production at the Papermill and, despite not beginning as an actor until he was in his late 30's at the Steppenwolf, has a darn fine pedigree as well. And Mr. Gennaro is from the Steppenwolf as well. It is all in who you know and surrounding yourself with the best. Wish I could get to this show too. Sheesh.

LL - We've had the circular from the Papermill for the Drawer Boy on our refrigerator for weeks. My wife kept asking whether I had seen any reviews. I read your post and immediately made reservations. We're going to tomorrow's matinee. Thanks. |

We've been Paper Mill subscribers for over 20 years and I'm very interested in the new direction it has taken under Mr. Gennaro. He's trying something very risky, to basically change the scope of the theater's offerings without totally alienating his current subscriber base (many of whom seem to want to see yet more revivals of "Annie" or "Man of La Mancha" - both nice shows, but the Paper Mill's repertoire has been repeating in the time we've been subscribers). I didn't see "Drawer Boy", because my son wanted to see it, so he and his father went. Both were very impressed by the show and the performances, and thought it was too bad that the house wasn't full for the show. Me? I enjoyed "Harold and Maude"! I believe the next two shows are "The Baker's Wife" and "Ragtime", neither of which has been done at the Paper Mill before. I hope his gamble works out; this season has been much more interesting than many of the past ones. |

Duncan, not too worry, one of these days you'll be old enough for one of the other parts. |

mjc.. this list just gets longer.. cant play Edmund in Long Day's Journey anymore Cant play Romeo (dont really want to) many roles I have aged out of. But then again...Sweeney Todd is approaching and I am right now getting to play a monumental role I would never have otherwise had the opportunity to play, so overall it balances out.
