INKOM, Idaho - Torri Hutchinson's cat might just have one less life to live. Hutchison was driving along Interstate 15 one day recently when a motorist kept trying to get her attention and pointing to the roof of her car.

She said she was wary of the man, but wondered if perhaps her ski rack might have come loose.

She pulled over to the side, but kept her doors locked and the motor running.

The man pulled up behind her. Hutchinson rolled down her window to hear the man frantically shouting, "Your cat! Your cat!"

He reached for the roof of her car and handed the shocked Hutchinson her orange tabby.

She had driven about 10 miles with the cat on top of the car, and didn't even notice the feline when she stopped for gas.

Hutchinson said Cuddle Bug, or C.B. for short, had climbed into the back of her car as she was getting ready to leave. She put him out, but he must have jumped on the roof while she wasn't looking, she said.

WARNING, THIS WILL BE SHOCKING TO MANY ON MOL

One of Mrs. K's cousins and his family lived in a small town in Massachussets and taught at the local college.

They had, emphasis on the had, a couple of cats. The felines, probably not among the rocket scientists of that species, learned to get under the hood of the cars and snuggle up next to the warm raidiator on cold winter days. Over a period of two months they disposed of both of the cats when starting the cars. Very messy.

Some cats, contrary to common believe, don't have nine lives.

OTOH, Bobk, my sister acquired one of her cats after hearing an odd sound under the hood one morning. She pulled over, opened the hood and there was half-grown cat over to the side by one of the fenders. No harm, just a little stressed. Great cat with attitude, too.

The horse farm I grew up on had cats all over the place. They would stop by one day and then stick around for a few years. It was a habit that we all had (especially in the winter) to bang on the hood, or smack the side of the tractor before starting it.

Stories like Bobk's are mentioned in every cat care book I've ever seen - this is serious stuff. If your cat has access to the garage, make sure you thump on the hood a few times before you start the car in the morning.

As to the original story, I've driven off with cups of coffee on my roof more frequently than I'd like to admit. I also once drove off with my pocketbook on the roof, which miraculously stayed there until somebody honked and told me.

Why did the cat on my lap have to be reading over my shoulder when I clicked on this thread? Now I am going to have to pay close attention whenever we start the car.

Joan: I would like to believe that the cat on your lap is intelligent enough to take this as a cautionary tale, and stay the heck away from the car!

One of our cats cling to the roof of our car when we were young. But it was only for a few blocks.
