Looks like someone fired the designers at Newhouse and let the sales staff hit the site with an ugly stick.

Only about 12 percent of this page has unsold content and even that portion now is covered for 10 seconds by an ad layered on top of it.

Wonder what the next "big idea" is for advertising.

..gives them more revenue for their legal defense fund...

but yes, a truly awful page. and to think nj.com was one of the early leaders (maybe first?) in regional web sites.

a few weeks ago they were passing out fliers at the train station for the South Orange "section" -- an absolutely miserable thing with (IMO) no worthwhile content on it at all.

Dave - You should bring your comments to the attention of the guy at this site:

http://www.buzzmachine.com/

He's Jeff Jarvis, the president and "creative director" of Advance.net, which runs NJ.com and other regional newspaper sites.

He's also interested in all-things-internet, so you may want to tell him about the anti-message board lawsuit.

There is some good South Orange content at NJ.Com:

and even:

Other than the blogs and forums, which you noted, there is almost nothing South Orange.

They try to aggregate content -- just isnt enough!

This reminds me of an old Onion headline that said
"SPORTING EVENT COMPLETELY OBSCURED BY ON SCREEN GRAPHICS"
